Charon Devereux

Hello! My 3rd great-grandfather was Charon Devereux born about 1814. I don't know when he immigrated to the US, but he ended up in Liberty County, Georgia by 1844 when he married Delilah Johns. They had 8 children between 1846 and 1861. He died in September 1861 in Liberty County, Georgia during the American Civil War.

I have found 2 other men with similar names. Keran Devereux is listed as missing from New York in 1879 in a posting by his mother Julia. That posting says this Keran was 35 years old at this time, about 20 years younger than my Charon. Another Keran Devereux is the right age, but survives at least to 1870, where he is listed in the Census in Kansas with his family. I think that both of these men were named Kieran/Ciaran, but my 3rd great-grandfather insisted on the spelling "Charon." I don't believe this is Ciaran spelled badly.

So I found in Co. Wexford there were some Devereux families living there, and there is or was also a parish named Parish named Chapel-Charon. I wonder if anyone knows the genealogy of these Devereux families and whether my Charon b. 1814 was part of these families?

Apologies for the very long delay in answering your message. Have you learned any more about the above?

Clare, thanks for your response. I have not been able to learn anything else about him yet, but I am still interested in finding out where he was born and what family he belongs to.

Hi Erin

The link below will give you an indication of the spread of the family name in Ireland in the 19th Century:

http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/index.cfm?Surname=Devereux&f….

The spelling of his first name is not common and so a potential plus in your search. However I wasn't able to find a baptism record for him. There are 14 baptism entries for a C Devereux between 1810 and 1830 but all are female. Neither the Tithe Applotment Books nor the Griffith's Valuation provide any hints - I thought that if he were named after a relative they might be listed there  in some form but no luck.

As an aside, records for Killegney and Glynn, the corresponding RC parishes for Chapel-Charon do not begin until 1817 and 1816 respectively, so just short of the c.1814 birth year for Charon (if that is the correct parish).

Do you think you have exhausted all resources your side in relation to marriage, military, death records?

Best wishes

I'm not sure. There is some lack of clarity regarding his country of birth and immigration status. It's possible he immigrated to the USA as a child with his parents, as a young adult, or that his parents immigrated before he was born. I don't know his parents, so can't look up their immigration records, and I can't find any immigration records for him under his own name.

My wife's great great grandfather was Charon Devereaux of Liberty County Georgia.  The Devereaux homestead is no longer there but the family still owns the property.  Her grandmother was Ellen Devereaux Grey born 1884.

I'm definitely related to your wife, then, but I haven't gotten any further figuring out who Charon was.
