Cecilia Mulaghton (nee Carey) Lisnaskea?

I'm trying to find the death of Cecilia Mulaghton. My great Uncle Lawrence Mulaghton is listed as her widower, but I cannot find any trace of her death (or indeed of his marriage to my great aunt!) I know that Lawrence was a guard in Northern Ireland in the 1920s and was in prison in 1923 accused of murder, for which he was later cleared. He later moved to Scotland where he and my Great Aunt Margaret went on to have a family from 1930 onwards. On Lawrence's death record in 1960, Cecilia is listed as his deceased first wife. There is indeed a record of their marriage in Scotland in 1920. However, I can find no trace of her death as either Cecilia Mulaghton or Cecilia Carey. Can anyone help at all with any suggestions as to where I should look next?

If Lawrence and your Great aunt Margaret had children in Scotland from the 1930s onwards, I suggest you get one of the children’s birth certificates. Scottish birth certificates normally record where and when the parents were married. So that may help you establish whether they did marry, and the location.

I looked for a Cecelia Mulaghton death in Northern Ireland 1920 – 1940 but did not find one.

Thanks Elwyn, that was the only other thing I could think of to do.

Having seen a birth certificate for the oldest of Margaret and Laurence's children, it states they were married in Newtownbutler in October (either 25th or 28th) 1925.  I am unable to find any record of this marriage taking place and suspect it never did and that Cecilia, Laurence's wife was still alive but living elsewhere.

Any suggestions as to where to go next with this?

Eileen,

You haven’t given Margaret’s maiden name so I couldn’t search under that name, but I agree I cannot find a Mulaghton marriage in the Lisnaskea area in 1922-1931, on the GRONI site. (For info, Ancestry and Irish genealogy don’t have NI marriages post 1921). So they probably never married.

I searched for Cecelia’s death 1940-1960 in both Northern Ireland and the Republic but did not find it.  I don’t know where she went.

Hi,

I see this is an old post but I am Thomas Mulaghton.

Grandson of Lawrence Mulaghton & Margaret Ann Mulaghton(Connolly)

I have found the marriage Certificate for Lawrence & Margaret. They married under the name Milton in Fermanagh in 1925 before moving to Scotland.

I cannot find any death certificate for Cecilia Mulaghton(Carey) anywhere.

Please get in touch if you have found out any info on what happened to Cecilia.

Thanks.

Thomas.
