Caveny/Winters/Coan

I am trying to trace my family. I have my great grandfather Michael Caveny, born about 1813 in Roscommon. His parents were John Caveny born about 1790 also in Roscommon & Kitty Winters born in either Glanworth or Ballinfal in County Sligo. He had 3 siblings, James, Catherine & Mary. He immigrated to the United States before 1848. He married Ann Coen (Coan), also originally from Ireland, records show she arrived in the Port of New York on the Redwing on Sept 13, 1948 leaving from the port of Galway. I have no information on her parents, but she was born about 1820.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on Roots Ireland and was unable to find a baptismal record in Co. Roscommon for a Michael Caveny with a father John in the early part of the 19th century.

Rgearding Kitty Winters, I searched in Co. Sligo on Roots and did not find a baptismal record for her. Also did not find a marriage record. Possibly the RC parish was Ballinafad/Aghanagh which borders Roscommon http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0533  The records for that parish go back far but there is a gap in the marriage records which likely cover the period when the couple were married.

Let me know what questions you have.

Roger, thanks for checking.

Does Segn mean anything in Irish? Some records have his name as Michael Segn Caveny.

Again, thanks,

HI Judy-Are you sure its not Michael Sean Caveny. Sean(p.-SHAWN) is John in Irish gaelic.Michael John was a fairly common name .Second names were often used if there were lots of similar first names around.CAVENY might be a variant of CAVANAGH-spellings sometimes got changed in the US.

Liam,

Thanks for the suggestion - duh! I should have thought of that.  I have a cousin who has actually been to Ireland to do some research & he sent me some of what he has.

1 - It is Sean, not Segn (most likely a transcription error).

2 - Ann Coen's father was John Coen, born 1800 in Rosscommon, died Apt 1870 in Ballaghaderreen, County Mayo.  He was married to Ellen O'Fallon who was also born in Roscommon. Ann was born in 1820 also in Rosscommon, she Immigrated to the US in 1848.

3 - Michael Sean Caveny was born in 1820 in Sligo, son of John Caveny & Catherine (Kitty) Winters.

He also included something about a Tithe Applotment - Diocese of Killala, Parish of Templeboy for Patrick Caveny dated 24 Sept 1833.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Judi, I am a descendent of John Caveny and Kitty Winter. Michael and Ann Coen Caveny were my great great grandparents and they are buried in St. Mary's Cemetary in Wood River Nebraska. One of their sons, John, is my great grandfather and lived in Carlinville Illinois and is buried there.
