Caufield family of New York, Wisconsin, Iowa and New York

I am researching the ancestors of Patrick Caufield.born 22 Nov 1853 in New York, USA. He married a Margaret Troy in Adams, Green, Wisconsin, USA on 26 Nov 1876. The marriage states that his parents were from Ireland. His father was Patrick Caufield and his mother was listed as Catherine (no surname). Patrick's father was also named Patrick. It is believed from the US Census records he was from Northern Ireland. I do know he had a sister Margaret also born in New York. Patrick, born in Ireland, his parents may have been Geoffrey and Catherine Tierney but I have no proof. Any help would be appreciated.

Attached is the 1870 US Census showing Patrick with his mother, Catherine and his sister Margaret at the very bottom (ignore the highlighted portion)..

Please clarify "his parents may have been Geoffrey and Catherine Tierney"......who is "he"? You mention three generations of Patrick Caulfields......not sure how Geoffrey and Catherine fit in.

Patrick born in New York's father was Patrick, born in Ireland. His parents may have been Geoffrey and Catherine Tierney.

Pete,

This will be difficult to figure out because you are searching for early records. On the paid site, Roots Ireland, I searched for marriage records in all of Ireland for a Patrick Caulfield married to a Catherine between 1848 & 1853 - guessing those years would be approximate. The results showed three marriages in these counties - Donegal, Limerick, and Monaghan. There were no fathers' names mentioned. So, you would be guessing here....and Roots doesn't have all the records, nor are all marriage records for all counties online for those years. When I made the search to cover a ten year period, no more marriages showed up. Finally, only the Limerick marriage had a witness with either the same surname....that was James Caulfield. I don't know how or where you found that the grandparents of Patrick Caulfield (1853) were possibly Geoffrey Caulfield and Catherine Tierney.
