Castle in our Hanlon family

When I was a young girl, my Grampa Joseph Hanlon went to Ireland to deal with an estate that included a castle. As a young girl, I remember being excited because we owned a castle. Not sure of the details but would like to find out more about it and my Irish roots.

my Great Grampa, Benjamin Hanlon (1856-1943) came to Canada in 1861 at the age of 5-6 with his parents Joseph (1814-1870) and Sarah (Sally) nee Hamilton (1819-1891) and his sisters Anne (1846-1892), Joanna (1852-?) and Eleanor (1854-?).

Marriage records show that Benjamin’s grandfather, my GGG grandfather’s name was Abraham and they lived in County Donegal.

Benjamin’s dad Joseph may also have gone by Neil (?)

I’m not sure how or where to seek information on Abraham or this castle my grandfather talked about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Carols:

I assume your ancestors were Church of Ireland.

I located the December 2 1845 civil marriage record for Joseph Hanlon and Sally Hamilton  https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/files/civil/marriage_returns/marriages_1845/09293/5364363.pdf

Both parties lived in Toberkeen townland in Templecrone civil parish, Templecrone parish is in west Co. Donegal. There were a number of Hanlon families in Toberkeen in the 1901 census and two Hamilton families.

The 1828 Tithe listings for Templecrone civil parish shows eight Hanlon families. I don't see an Abraham Hanlon but there is an Andrew Hanlon.

I can't help you with the question about the castle but at least you know where your family lived.

Yes any records I’ve found show Church of Ireland. thank you. I have the marriage record, that’s where I got Abraham’s name from but other than that, info on him is hard to find!

I also believe that William Hanlon (1812?) and Ellen (1816) were children of Abraham. I can’t figure out if William died in Ireland or if he went to Australia or also came to Canada as I’ve seen records that indicate any could be correct.

I really want to go to Ireland to do more research and see the homeland of my paternal family but would love to find out anything I can about this castle.
