Cassidy & McVeigh families in Tyrone

Searching for information on Bernard Cassidy, Co Tyrone (born ca 1780 and died prior to 1849) and his wife Catherine McVeigh whom he married ca 1812 (born ca 1783 to James McVeigh) .

Known children - Mary ca 1815, William Bernard, ca 1817, Joseph ca 1823, and possibly John.

Catherine McVeigh Cassidy and her children Mary, William and Joseph arrived in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in November 1849 and were in New Britain, Connecticut, USA in June 1850.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Both Cassidy & McVeigh are common names in Co. Tyrone. In the 1901 census there were 349 Cassidy and 227 McVeigh.  Widespread across the county. Without having some idea of where in the county your ancestors lived it is going to be hard to trace them.

Statutory recording of births, deaths & marriages did not start in Ireland till 1864, long after your ancestors had left. Prior to that we rely on church records, where they exist. Unfortunately hardly any RC churches in  Co.Tyrone have any baptism or marriage records for the 1700s and or for the early 1800s. I have searched for this family and their children on the RC records on Ancestry but without success.

Possibly DNA testing may be a way of matching with others who have additional information about where the family originate. Family Tree DNA reportedly has more people with Ulster roots than any other company. That obviously increases the chances of finding a match. If you have already tested your DNA with Ancestry, My Heritage or 23&Me you can upload your DNA results to Family Tree DNA for free and then join the North of Ireland Family History Society DNA Project. Simple instructions on how to do this can be found here:

On RootsIreland, I found a head of household named Bernard Cassidy in the tithe applotment books in 1825 in the townland of Ballineal Beg in Artrea parish.  This may have been your Bernard.

The RC parish of Ardtrea has no baptism or marriage records before 1830, so if that’s the right parish for your family there are not going to be any baptism or marriage records to confirm the facts.

Few RC parishes kept burial records so if Bernard died there c 1849, unless he has a gravestone and it’s still legible, there won’t be any record of that either.

Thanks to both Elwyn and Patricia for you efforts.

I uploaded my DNA to Family Tree DNA and joined the North Ireland DNA project.

On the 1825 Tithe applotment books, there is a Bernard Cassidy and James McVeagh. A very good start, thanks to both of you.
