Cash ancestors Tullylease parish, Co.Cork

CorkTullylease (Cork)

I've been struggling to locate any trace at all of my Co.Cork ancestors. The information I have I am sure of but I don't know where to start as I only know that they came from Co.Cork before emigrating to Co.Durham in NE England.

I am sending you all the information I have which I am sure will help you.

The first time I located them was on the 1871 census(attached). The father was Timothy Cash and his wife Mary. Unfortunately I don't have the wife's maiden name or when they were married.

According to the 1871 census Timothy was age 55 years and Mary also. There is a son Timothy(or Edward) age 16 years, Mary 10 years and Daniel age 8 years.

In the same household was James Corbet age 37 years married to Catherine, age 20 years. She was originally Timothy's eldest daughter born c.1850. She married James Corbet on 21/01/1868, locally. A census records James as being born in Kilmurray,Co.Cork and Catherine in Co.Cork,

If there is anything else you wish to know please write to me?

Many thanks,

Godfrey Duffy

You didn't mention where you got the parish name Tullylease, but there is a civil parish of that name in Cork, and you can see more info about it at this link:  https://www.townlands.ie/cork/tullylease2/

There is also a townland of the same name in that parish, and you can see a link to it at that site.

The boundaries and names of the civil parishes and Catholic parishes can differ, and in this case the Catholic parish would be Freemount, which appears from the map to be a good bit larger than the civil parish of Tullylease, so it may include some or all of several other civil parishes.  The Catholic parish records which are available online for Freemount can be found at this link, so if the family were Catholic, you may want to look there (the records go back to 1827, with some gaps):  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0052

If you find a relevant baptism in the parish records, it will often give the name of the townland where the family lived, and you can then get more info about that townland by going to the link mentioned above (whether they lived in the townland of Tullylease or one of the other townlands in the parish).

The Catholic parish of Kilmurry is located 5-6 parishes south of Freemount, and the parish records for Kilmurry go much further back, to 1786).  You can find those records here:  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0070

Kilmurry and Freemount are not all that close to one another, but it was not unknown for people to marry someone from another parish.

There is also a civil parish named Kilmurry located within the Catholic parish of that name, but it appears to be smaller than the Catholic parish.  You can see more info about the civil parish (and the townlands within it) at this link:  https://www.townlands.ie/cork/kilmurry/

Godfrey:

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I started working on this message earlier today and then my Internet went out for six hours. Kevin has provided you with some good information and resources. As Kevin pointed out the RC parish of Freemount/Milford has some gaps notably from 1844- early 1858. This affects finding baptismal records for the daughter Catherine and the son Timothy/Edward. However, I did find records for Mary and Daniel on the subscription site Roots Ireland. See transcription below. In one record the mother is Ellen Keligher and Mary Keligher in the other record.

The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Tullylease civil parish has a Bridget Cash in Tullylease townland.  Possibly this is the mother of Timothy Cash. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/cork/tullylease.htm

Hello Roger, (McDonnell)

Thanks for your email in answer to mine. I feel Tullylease is the parish I seek for a number of reasons.

It is in County Cork. I know this from information in British census returns.

After an extensive search this is the only parish I found a suitable Timothy Cash resident with I believe his brother Denis and sister or mother Bridget Cash. I found the three of them in the Valuation books in 1848 and 1849. They were all together in 1848 but in 1849 their houses had been pulled down. Denis Cash married a Catherine Connors on 20 March 1851 in Freemount RC parish, and had a son Timothy on 3 August 1856 in Kanturk parish. By the 1861 census he was living in Crook, Co.Durham very close to the Timothy Cash family.

In the Freemount baptisms I noticed a child Ann was born in 1843 to William Farmer and Ellen Cash. He was the immediate lessor to the Cash group in the Valuation books.

I am not sure Thadeus is Timothy but the dates tie in with what I've discovered so far.

All the best,

Godfrey Duffy
