Casey, Margaret Co. Cork born c.1820

What parish did Margaret Casey come from?

Margaret's mother was also named Margaret Casey and in 1847 she had sisters Mary Casey and Ellen Casey and a brother John Casey.  Margaret, a Roman Catholic, was 27 at the time of her trial in Kanturk, Co. Cork on 21 June 1847.  She was tried for stealing a firkin of butter (she was a dairy maid) and sentenced to seven years transportation to Van Diemens Land (now Tasmania, Australia).  There's more to tell about her life in Australia, but first we'd like to find out which parish she was born in.

Is anyone living descended from John Casey, Mary Casey or Ellen Casey?  Which were the likely dairying districts around Kanturk where home might have been for the family?

Many thanks, Doug

My John Casey with a Mary was from Mitchelstown Co. Cork in 1760 two of his children Andrew and John went to Halifax Canada in 1818 then on to Washington County Missouri in 1830. Maybe yours came from East Cork earlier?

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There are a number of civil parishes in the area around Kanturk. Kilroe and Kilcorcoran are the two parishes which correspond to Kanturk RC parish. Although the trial was in Kanturk, Margaret and her family could have lived 15 miles away in another parish other than Kilroe or Kilcorcoran.

Do you know the name of Margaret's father? Since Casey was a common surname, having the father's name would be a big help.

In any event, the RC parish records for Kanturk parish start in July 1822 which appears to be to late for Margaret. I did check Roots Ireland and did not find a baptismal record for Margaret. Possibly if Ellen and/or John  was/were younger than Margaret that you may find their record on the Kanturk parish register http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0063

Dear Roger, thanks for your reply and welcome.  Margaret Casey's father was not listed in 1847 at the time of Margaret's trial at Kanturk, so I'm assuming he was no longer alive.  I realise that Margaret could well have lived outside Kanturk, but don't know what RC parishes to look at that would have been served by the Kanturk Court.  I did search your link without success, which also points to a non-Kanturk parish as most likely.

I'm looking for instances of baptisms of Mary Casey, Ellen Casey and John Casey each born to Margaret X.  That would give me the RC parish name that I'm after.  Regards, Doug

When you go to the link for the Kanturk parish register there should be a map of the RC parishes around Kanturk. I would look at the registers for those parishes. A lot of tedious work but you may find the records. Once you identify those parishes you want to search, go to the main page registers.nli.ie  and enter the parish name to get the actual register.

Thanks, Roger.  I'd already done what you've suggested - the 'tedious work' - but without success.  Perhaps one day.
