Carroll,Mara and Corboy Families

11 members of the Carroll familyvisitedLorrha in June 2015. Our great grandfather is Michael Carroll born approx 1839 in Lorrha. Our great grandmother is Julia Mara and her mother and father are John Mara and Bessie Corboy. There is differing info on when Julia was born approx 1839. They have a son John Joseph Carroll in New York City in 1871. Michael passes away in New York City in 1874 and Julia remarries a John Fanning and she passes in New York City in 1912.

Although since the visit there has been substantial expansion of the family tree, the date of marriage and Michaels family and parents remain unknown. Based on the naming of his children and if he followed normal Irish naming conventions it would be possible that Thomas and Margaret Carroll could be his parents.

Any information on either family branch would be greatly appreciated

Dan:

I checked the Roots Ireland indexes and found an 1839 baptismal record for a Judith Mara in the Terryglas RC church records. The parents were John and Elizabeth. Terryglass RC parish is to the southwest of Lorrha/Dorrha RC parish. I also checked for Michael Carroll in the Lorrha records. There were no records in 1839. The closest were three records in 1835 but without knowing the parents names, you won't be able to determine if any of these records is for your ancestor.

Roots is a subscription site. Later this summer the National Library of Ireland plans to place all RC parish registers online for free searching. I would review the Terryglass and Lorrha records at that time.

I also located the 1850 griffiths Valutaion head of household listing for Lorrha and Terryglass civil parishes. It looks like the surname for Mara was Meara at least in these two files.

Roger,

Thank you for your very quick reply.  You have given me a new start to research before our trip!

Do you happen to know how I might get a copy of the baptismal record for Judith Mara? Do you know if the Terryglass RC church is still open and available to visit?

Thank you for all of your help.

Dan:

The parish is still in business although likely the church is not the one used in 1839. I would send an e-mail to the church office to see if they can assist. When the registers are online later this year, you should be able to print a copy of the register for the Judith Mara baptism.

Maggie,

Thank you for the information you provided. I had guessed that the Carroll and Meara families were acquainted given the close proximity of the families.  Your information seems to confirm that with members of the families participating in the family baptisms of the Herrig/Herrick.

I have not uncovered any links to Australia at this point but I am hopeful we will find some additional information on Michael Carroll

Hi Dan

To follow up on your query from the regarding the Mara and the possible Terryglass link as identified by Roger in previous letter we in this parish have discovered records for at least one sister of Julia/Judith Mara her name is Margaret born 1833 and she married a Thomas Whelan and their decendants we believe are still living in the parish.

On the records we have identified so far Judith had at least three siblings Ellen born 1831, Margaret born 1833 and Betty born 1837 all born in the townland of Turavoggaun near the village of Ballinderry in the parish of Terryglass/Kilbarron there were also Corboys living nearby.

Would prefer not to indentify the families further in a public forum such as this so if you wish you can write to me at ryan.bill68@gmail.com and I can update you further.

Bill,

Thank you.  I will contact you directly.

From the info provided by Roger and Griffiths Valuation from the askaboutireland website I have been able to locate what I think is the land occupied by the Carroll, Meara and Corboy families and we are looking forward to visiting.

I have also been in touch with the churches in both areas.

I want to thank everyone for their assistance.  It should be a great trip.

My family is connected to the Corboys through a marriage likely to a Hoctor or a Corrigan. (Also have some Meara's and Carrols) I Have DNA evidence just trying to tie in the paper trail. If anyone researching the Corboy family (esp near Borrisokane or Terryglass) and comes across this connection, please contact me at nwsulik@yahoo.com ? Thank you.
