Carroll ancestry

I'm trying to trace my Carroll ancestry but am a bit stuck. My GGG grandfather was Joseph Carroll and born in Sydney, NSW Australia, in1814 but I can't find his birth record. He came to NZ in 1842 and married here. His death cert shows that his fathers name was also Joseph Carroll but his mother is not named. I can find nothing on his father in Australia, I figure he would have come to Australia not that long before 1814 but I can't find shipping records and don't know if he came with his wife or married when he got there - I can't find him on convict records either. I have read one thing that says he came from Cork but I'm unable to verify that. Any help would be grately appreciated.

Dear skir001

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

There are two ways to search church records for Cork (civil registration does not begin until 1864). You can go to:

www.rootsireland.ie  - this is a subscription site that has records of baptisms and marriages for the north Cork area

www.irishgenealogy.ie - this is a free site that holds records for the rest of Cork.

The reason there are two sites with different modes of operation and administration is that decisions were made in relation to access to the parish records in some counties, Cork being one of these. Some records were provided for transcription to the family history centres as part of the Roots Ireland project (ongoing throughout Ireland) while others were retained and given to the irishgenealogy site.

Have a look at these and let me know how you get on. Unfortunately, something you may have to consider Is that Joseph was born in a parish and at a time that predates parish records. Fingers crossed you will find something in one of the above sites.

Best wishes

Dear Friends

I believe I am the 5x great nephew of Joseph Carroll through (I think) his brother James.

I am very interested in Sandra's  (skiri001) research.

The publicly available material I have for Joseph in NZ matches the Joseph I have in Australia- b 1814, father Irish, ex NSW Botanical Dept.

There were few (I can only find the one, ours) Joseph Carroll born in the Colony at or about 1814.

There were also very few Joseph Caroll's arriving pre 1814, as a candidate father.

I am still waiting on a copy of Joseph's death certificate I ordered on the weekend, and see from your post that the father is given by the informant as Joseph.

I have had a few death certificates where the informants have been incorrect, or mistranscribed eg Jas for James becomes Jos for Joseph.

I hope that this might be the case, but of course, I could be wrong.

My reasearch is bolstered by an old family story of there being a family connection with a "Maori princess".  This made no sense with the rest of the family history until we located Joseph and Tapuke.  I am culturally ignorant and apologise for any inappropriateness, but I understand she was a woman of high standing.  Sir James' biographies give hints, but few details of his father.  I have seen somewhere a reference to Sir James grandfather also being "named James"

I'm hoping/trusting not, as Ive been going through the Colonial musters for this family over a number of years.

I believe your/my Joseph is the son of James Carroll aka McArdle (an Irishman convicted in the Salop Assizes in 1801, who arrived in the "Perseus/Coromandel/Herclues" convict transports in 1802 (most likely the Coromandel)) and Bridget Russell,( tried in the Old Bailey and tranported in 1806 arriving in 1807 on the "Sydney Cove").

They raised a large family variously recrded as Carroll and McArdle/McCardwill and various other spellings.  Bridget was illiterate, so the musters have many mmispellings, but the number, name and ages of the children are unmistakeably the same.

James was a shipwright and sawyer with the Colonial administration.

If your Joseph and my Joseph are the same, it will help tremedously to "triangulate" his life and movements once he left the family home.

I cannot find migration details, save that he appears in the Bay of Islands, then Hawkes Bay in the early 1840's, based on obituaries and generalised agricultural/whaling histories.

i would be delighted to share any information with you.
