Cantwell / McCabe / O'Shaughnessy / Gannon (Ireland and Liverpool, UK)

I can't add ancestors because I have no idea which parish they came from, it just says Ireland on the census.

I'm looking for relatives of the above surnames.  So far I have the following direct ancestors:

Patrick O'Shaughnessy c.1795 - Unknown: my 4th great grandfather born in Ireland

Richard O'Shaughnessy 1825 - 1881: my 3rd great grandfather born in Ireland

Patrick O'Shaughnessy 1848 - 1893: my 2nd great grandfather born in Ireland, moved to Liverpool

Margaret O'Shaughnessy 1885 - 1957: my great grandmother born in Liverpool

William Cantwell 1818 - 1890: my 3rd great grandfather born in Ireland, moved to Liverpool

John Cantwell 1842 - 1898: my 2nd great grandfather born in Ireland, moved to Liverpool

Sarah Cantwell 1887 - 1982: my great grandmother born in Liverpool

Hi,

To start - O'Shaughnessy commonly recorded as "Shaughnessy" had an estate in South Co.Galway in the area of Gort. They lost their estate following the battle of Aughrim nearby in July 1691. Many moved across the Shannon estuary to West County Limerick.

In Griffith's Land valuation taken taken c1850 there are 4 "Richard Shaughnessy" in West Limerick, 1 in County Kerry and 1 O'Shaughnessy in Limerick city area. You can access this site  www.askaboutireland.ie ; free.

The name "Cantwell" can mainly be found in Counties Kilkenny and Tipperary; "McCabe" in Counties Antrim and Armagh; "Gannon" in Counties Galway, Cavan, Mayo.

Hi, Richard O'Shaughnessy (1825-1881) was my 2nd great grandfather. If this is the one who married Margaret Gannon.

Hi Tom

Yes, Margaret was Richard's wife.  Are you on ancestry?

Best wishes, Paige.

Hi Paige,
Yes, I'm on ancestry although my membership has lapsed.

I don't think you need to have a subscription to view public trees or if you have an invitation to the tree from the editor.  Let me know if you want to connect, we might be able to help build each other's trees.

Hi Paige,

Sorry for the 4 and a half year gap between messages.

I'd completely forgotten about our conversation.

How are you getting on with the family research?

Tom
