Canices Well?

Hello all,

I found the baptismal record for my GG Grandfather at St. Canice's parish in County Kilkenny. The address is listed as Canices Well. A sibling's baptismal record in the same parish lists the address as Kennys Well. Can anyone tell me what these place names signify? Is this an area in Kilkenny City? I am hoping to make a trip to visit County Kilkenny sometime this year. Thanks for any information you might have.

Thanks so much for these links, Mary. This is a bucket-list destination for me, and I am so looking forward to visiting Kilkenny!

Kilkenny town is great to visit. There are two St. Canice's churches in Kilkenny town. The one closest to the town would be the Church of Ireland Cathedral. The RC church is a little further out. I would also visit the Black Abbey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Abbey and St. Mary's RC Cathedral. Here are two food/drink establishments that are worth visiting.

Thank you for the information, Roger. I found the 1856 marriage record for my GG Grandparents with the parish listed as St. Canice's (RC) and am trying to figure out where the sacrament would have taken place. The church you mention that's further out would be St. Mary's? I assume that one's not in St. Canice parish then, correct? That would leave the Black Abbey as a possibility? If anyone has any suggestions on how to sort that out I'd be most grateful. The priest's name on the record, as best I can decipher it, is Rev. John O'Hanlon. Would the diocese have a list of past priests and where they served?

No, I think the baptism occurred in the St. Canice RC church that existed in 1856 from what I can see. Here is the link to the web site for the current parish of St. Canice https://www.stcanicesparish.ie/our-parish/parish-office/

Not sure where you are staying but when you go north through the town, you should first encounter the Church of Ireland St. Canice's Cathedral then further on you find St. Canice's RC church and then back into town you hit the Black Abbey and then St. Mary's RC Cathedral is nearby. The Diocese of Ossory would likely have a list of former parish priests and where they served.

Thanks again, Roger! I did not realize there were two different churches named St. Canice's in the town. Now this is making more sense. :)
