Campbell Family from County Derry to Baltimore, Maryland 1819

Derry

Hello!

I am new to this group and hopeful that someone may be able to guide me in breaking down a stubborn brick wall in my Campbell genealogy.

The progenitors of my Campbell line in the USA came over around 1819 from County Derry and settled in Baltimore, Maryland.

They are John Campbell (~1774-1854), native of Co. Derry, and Marian G Campbell (~1793-1856), possibly born in Scotland.

John was first listed as a grocer in Baltimore City and then purchased a small farm in Govanstown, Baltimore Co. in 1840.

Their children were as follows:

??? (Possibly James) Campbell b. ~1817

William Campbell b. ~1818 in Derry, d. 1863 in California (1849 CA Gold Rush participant)

John Campbell #1 b. 1819, d. 1823

Nancy Campbell Dorry Gilmore Young b. 1822, d. 1890 (stayed in Baltimore, grieved the loss of 3 husbands and a son, philanthropist and activist)

John Campbell #2 b. 1823 in Baltimore , d. 1911 in Philadelphia (also was a “California 49-er” but was a carpenter by trade)

Samuel W A Campbell (my 3rd great grandfather) b. 1830 in Baltimore, moved to Philadelphia in the 1870s, d. 1901 (carpenter)

John Sr., Marian, and John #1 were all buried in the same plot as a Capt. Samuel Campbell (1771-1807) and his son (born after his death), also named John Campbell (1807-1811) in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church cemetery.

I believe they were Presbyterian, but Capt. Samuel’s widow, Ann Elizabeth Buford, may have been Episcopalian.

Capt. Samuel was a merchant involved in importing sugar, cocoa, coffee, and other goodies from the Caribbean islands.

He moved from Santo Domingo to Baltimore between 1801 and 1803.

I suspect he was John’s brother.

While in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), he had been in a business partnership with an Archibald Campbell b. 1747 in Scotland?, d. 1805 in Baltimore.

Archibald is also buried at St. Paul’s.

I am seeking any information that might help me trace John and/or Marian G. back to Co. Derry and/or Scotland and find their families.

Any assistance would be enormously appreciated.

Thank you!

Bonnie (native resident of the greater Philadelphia area)
