Cahirciveens parish?

KerryAghadoe (Kerry)

Good morning, my name is Claudia Fernández McCarthy and I am writing from Spain.

I know my irish family (McCarthy) came from Cahirciveen in county Kerry. Could you please tell me what parish is it?
It is so difficult to trace your ancestors in Ireland. I only know my two times great grandfather Daniel Jeremiah McCarthy (1857) was born in Cahirciveen and, more recently I discovered his parents names which I believe are Randal McCarthy and Bridget McCarthy (previously Sullivan)

Claudia

Claudia!

Welcome!

The civil parish is Caher. Here is a link to the parish page on our site  https://irelandxo.com/ireland/kerry/caher-kerry

Here is a link to the RC parish register for Caherciveen with baptismal records for 1846- early 1879  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0658

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and possibly found six younger siblings to Daniel: William 1859 Justin 1860 Juliana 1862 Eugene 1866 John 1868  Randal 1870  but for some reason did not find the record for Daniel.  These records were not in Caherciveen RC parish but rather in Kenmare RC parish.   The family lived in Derreenacahill townland.

Possibly I have the wrong Randal McCarthy/Bridget Sullivan family. Do you know the names of the siblings to Daniel?

Good morning Roger, Thank you for your quick reply.
I have to say everything is very confusing. The only thing I know for sure is that he appears in the English census and his children's birth records as having been born in Cahersiveen either in 1857 or 1858.

Then, a few months ago I contacted a very nice man called Nigel McCarthy who is doing the "McCarthy Family Project" and he was kind enough to look online to see if he could find any Daniel Jeremiah McCarthy born in Cahirciveen around that time. He only found one and his parents names where Randal/Randolph and Bridget. He also found a Randal McCarthy in the Griffin's valuation living in Laharn north.
He sent me the links; he found his baptism in irishgenealogy.ie and it says the baptism took place on the 21 of July in Laharn. Book number: Cahirciveen - Entry number: 19 - Record identifier: KY-RC-BA-101919

Apart from that, I know nothing, sorry.
Where should I go from here?

Regards,   Claudia

The priest that officiated the ceremony was Rev D Browne

If anyone is interested in taking part in the McCarthy family project you can look for the Facebook page: McCarthyYDNA. Or the website: https://mccarthydna.wordpress.com/

Nigel is a lovely kind man, I would love many McCarthy men to join the program so we can all learn more about the McCarthy's origins.

Claudia:

I found the record you mentioned. There is no maiden name shown for Bridget so I assume Nigel has info that confirms her maiden name was Sullivan.

When I did the search initially, I asked for all records from 1850-1860 in Kerry where a Daniel McCarthy had a Sullivan connection  The 1857 record did not come up since Bridget had no last name.

I then went on the Caherciveen parish register and found the July 21 1857 record. https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634259#page/54/mode/1up

Bridget's name was shown as McCarthy. Common practice was to show the maiden name of the mother on baptismal records (and other records on the page showed a maiden name different then the husband's surname). My conclusion was that Bridget was also a McCarthy at birth which with a common name like McCarthy marriages with the bride and groom having the same name happened frequently.

So does Nigel have another record which shows Sullivan?

Please let me know and if you have any questions please followup. Thanks!

Roger
