Butlers of Williamstown, Ballingarry (Slieveardagh)

I am interested in the family of Catherine Butler, who was born about 1804, and her brother John Butler, born about 1812. Catherine married Richard Hackett of Freshford parish about 1826 and had the following children:

1827    Bridget Hackett

1829    Patrick Hackett

1831    John Hackett; married Mary Stokes; emigrated to Australia

1833    Judy Hackett; married Tom Pollard; emigrated to Australia

1835     Mary Hackett; emigrated to Australia

The emigration to Australia by most of Catherine's children was organised and led by her brother, John Butler, and included the children mentioned, himself, his wife Bridget and their own children, and occurred in 1855 aboard the Lord Raglan, bound for South Australia.

Catherine and John Butler appear to be grandchildren of William Butler (known as Billy), of Williamstown townland near the Kilkenny border. Catherine is mentioned as 'Catherine Butler, wife of Richard Hackett' in William Butler's will of 1826 and 1832. William Butler was married to Elinor or Ellen Boyd of Inchiholohan. I have attempted to take the Butler line futher back, earlier than the Williamstown Butlers, and have sketched out a possible ancestry with considerable and much appreciated help from Patrick Butler, Lord Dunboyne (who passed away in 2004, I think).

If anyone is interested in any of these details, I can attach diagrams, narratives and source documents in future postings.

Hi Dave,

Thank you very much for your message and for your offer to share information. I hope that someone with information on the families makes a connection with you.

In the meantime, I found this great website dedicated to the parish which may be of interest to you:

http://www.ballingarry.net/

Also, you could try contacting the local parish office to see if they can be of any assistance in terms of possible descendents that may still live in the area. Here are the contact details:

All the best,

Hi Dave,

I'm the Ballingarry (Slieveardagh) Parish Liaison and I have local knowledge so I can follow up on this for you if you need me to. There are still a number of Butler families in the parish and Pollard would be another well known local name. Because your family emigrated so early, it is unlikely there will be much in the way of records. The Ballingarry parish registers of births and marriages only go back to 1814 I'm afraid. The local priest and the Diocese do not permit access to the registers, However, there are copies on microfilm in the National Library in Dublin.

There is also a website of the local graveyards www.historicgraves.com and there are some Hacketts buried in the Old Church graveyard in the parish:

http://historicgraves.com/familysearch?term=&name=&surname=&inscription=&year_b%5Bmin%5D=&year_b%5Bmax%5D=&year_d%5Bmin%5D=&year_d%5Bmax%5D=&age%5Bmin%5D=&age%5Bmax%5D=&people_num%5Bmin%5D=&people_num%5Bmax%5D=&graveyard_ref=12927&stonecutter=

There is a Ballingarry Cultural and Historical Festival on the 27th and 28th of July for which I will be providing genealogy support. I will make enquiries then, from any Butlers or Pollards attending.

Let me know if you need me to check anything out for you. I can be contacted on ballingarry@irelandxo.com

Best wishes,

Noreen

Hi DAVE,

William seemed to have moved from magorban, fethard to williamstown back circa 1790.  PJ Maxwell, had carried out a lot of work on the family tree.  Can you post me on any details, my own father was born in Willian'stown, Christopher butler, his grandfather was Michael butler, and his grandfather was theobald, who was a son of william(Billy).  Thanks philip

I have matched DNA with  ancestors of a  Thomas Butler who emigrated to Indiana, U.S.A.

A Thomas Butler. Born c. 1859 - Died May 1933 at Fort Wayne, Indiana.  He emigrated c. 1889 to Indiana. His nephew John Butler who was born 14th July 1894 to Richard Butler & Mary Butler, Ballintaggart.  He emigrated 1915 to his uncle Thomas Butler. Born c. 1859. (One can see him on Ellis Island records)

John Butler's (born 1894) parents married 16th Sept. at Ballingarry. Richard Butler. Fmr. Williamstown son of William Butler.. Fmr to Mary Butler, Tinnock dau of Michael Butler. Fmr. Wits. Daniel Butler & Ellen Butler. (Their headstone is at Ballingarry. What I cannot understand in 1901 Census for this family was a Kate Fennelly mother-in-law).

So far I do not know if Thomas Butler. born c. 1859 was the brother of Richard Butler or his wife Mary Butler.

Hi Gerard (and other readers),

I do have an idea who your Richard Butler is. He is mentioned in the 1826 will of William Butler of Williamstown. William Butler was born about 1750 and married Ellinor Boyd of Inchiholohan Co Kilkenny about 1775. He died about 1825.

The will makes bequests to his children; I have calculated their dates of birth from the structure of their own families (whose births are attested):

John Butler, bn. c. 1780, m. Mary Mackey c. 1802; lived Bolintlea/Boulea 1815

Theobald Butler (Toby), bn. c. 1783; shown on House and Field Books 1845 and GV 1850 at Williamstown.

Richard Butler, bn. c. 1786, marr. Margaret Walsh; lived Bolakeale (SE of Wmstown) and Ballintaggart.

William Butler of Williamstown, known as “Billy”, bn. c. 1790; marr. Bridget Delaney and occupied Williamstown property.

Thomas Butler, bn. c. 1793; of Wmstn; in 1841 arrested as accomplice in the murder of Robert Butler Bryan, but found not guilty 1844; disappears between 1845-1850.

Anne Ellinor Butler, the only daughter, bn. c. 1796; marr. 1. Thomas Fitzgerald Hunt, c. 1820; 2. Hugo Nicholas Jones, 18 Jan 1833, Dublin city; d. 20 Jul 1873, Kilkenny, ‘only daughter of William Butler of Williamstown.’

The will also makes bequests to the two oldest grandchildren – presumably the others had not attained an age of majority:

Catherine Butler, bn. c. 1804, marr. Richard Hackett c. 1826; I am descended from this couple.

Mary Bridget Butler, bn. c. 1806; four possible marriages 1832-1834.

I have the family trees for the following of William Butler's children: John Butler and Mary Mackey (my family); Richard Butler and Margaret Walsh (your family); William Butler and Bridget Delaney (who retained Williamstown); and Anne Ellinor Butler and Hugo Nicholas Jones (who lived in Kilkenny). The son Thomas Butler disappears after his 1844 trial, and I remain convinced he emigrated to escape the notoriety. I know nothing of the son Theobald/Toby.

If you or anyone else using this website would like these family trees, I can upload them. There are a number of speculative aspects to them – including the outline above – and I welcome people with greater knowledge and expertise to run a critical eye over them.

Thank you Dave, you have excellent knowledge! Would be great to see family tree you mentioned, although if you upload them I'm not sure where to "find them" my email address alternatively karenroche82@yahoo.ie

I've only just found this thread. My Butler family lived adjacent to Williamstown in a neighbouring townland (The Common / Blackcommon) and I would love to know if or how they might connect to the Williamstown Butlers. I'd love to get in touch with anyone who knows more - sskeam@outlook.com.au
