Butler-Flanagan-Teahan-Cuffe-Roche and O'Donnell-Sullivan-Maunsell-Cicinor

Hi there...my maiden name is Butler.

My sister-in-law and I are traveling to Ireland in May 2025. We would like to find some of the places where my ancestors lived. I know that my 3xgreat grandparents on my father's maternal side, Rodger & Joanna (nee Cicinor) O'Donnell are buried in the Kilbehenny Ancient Burial Grounds. The headstone erected by their son, Darby. Darby was my 2xG gpa, married to Eleanor Maunsell. Their son Terrence (married to Alice Sullivan) was baptized in Kilbehenny in 1834 and came to the US in 1885 with Alice and their 10 children. They settled in Chicago.

My ggpa on my dad's paternal side was James Francis Butler, Married Ellen Coughlin approx 1875-1878 in Ireland. They with their son William, born approx 1879, left Ireland on the Furnesia. She died of "the black bile" on route to NYC. I cannot seem to find any baptism/birth records for any of these 3. I know that he remarried in 1884, Trenton, New Jersey (USA) to Anne "Nan" Flanagan, (b1859, Allen, Kildare, Ireland). Her parents were Daniel Flanagan and Mary Cuffe (M 1853, Allen, Kildare). After their 1st child (his 2nd) Mary Belinda (Mamie) was born, they moved to Chicago and had 4 more children.

His (James Francis Butler) parents were James/Jacobi Butler and Joanna Teahen (b 1819, Ballyfinane) (m 1847, Castlemaine Congregation). James/Jacobi's parents were Patrick Butler (b 1785) and Mary Roche (1787) (M 1806, Killarney). I cannot figure out where James Francis was born/baptized or where he and Ellen were married.

On my dad's maternal side: ggpa was James John O'Donnell (b 1862, Mitchelstown) married Marey Ann Kennedy (b 1865, Ardpatrick, Mitchelstown) (m 1886, Jesuit Cathedral, NYC). GGGpa was Terrence O'Donnell (b 1842, Anglesborough) married Alice Sullivan (b 1839, diocese of Galbally & Aherlow) (m 1858). Terrence's parents: Darby/Jeremiah O'Donnell (b 1780 Anglesborough), Eleanor Maunsell (b 1790) (m 1815). Darby/Jeremiah O'Donnell parents were Rodger/Roger O’Donnell (b 1749, Anglesborough, Co. Limerick) and Joanna Cicinor (b 1760, Anglesborough, Co. Limerick); Rodger & Joanna are buried in Kilbehenney Ancient burial Ground-headstone erected by son Darby);  Alice's parents: James Sullivan (b 1789, St. Marys Parish, Limerick) Judith McCarthy (b 1789) (m 1811).

James Sullivan's parents: Owen/Eugenius Sullivan (b 1767, St Marys Parish) Mary Hickson/Hixson (b 1771, St Marys Parish) (m 1795, St Marys Parish.

I would love some help in finding my roots in Ireland. We will have 7-10 days to wander.

Thank you

Mary

Mary:

It will take some time to research your family connections. We will also ask you to fill out our Meet and Greet form https://irelandxo.com/meet-and-greet for each specific area of interest. For example, we know your have connections in Kilbeheny Co. Limerick so that is one form to complete. As our volunteers identify other locations, additional forms will be needed.

Civil registration of RC marriages started in 1864 but I can't find a marriage record for James Butler and Ellen Coughlan. I also did not find a baptismal record for their son William. Maybe they married in England or possibly the USA.

For James John O'Donnell, I located a November 12 1859 baptismal record in Mitchelstown RC parish. Parents were Terrence O'Donnell and Catherine Sullivan. Could this be your ancestor? Family was shown living in Marshalstown. Marshalstown is also a civil parish in Co. Cork. Alice Sullivan and Terry O'Donnell married November 27 1858 in Galbally and Aherlow RC parish.

More to come.

Roger,

Thank you. No, my Terrence O'Donnell (b 1842 Anglesborough, Co Limerick) married Alice Sullivan (b Dec 1847) on 27 Nov 1858, Galbally & Aherlow, but their son James John was baptized 23 June 1861, Mitchaeltown, County Cork. He, Alice and their children still at home. came to the US in 1885. James John came in 1886. They all settled in Chicago.

I also found the manifest for the Furnessia voyage (25 June 1883) that James Francis Butler, His wife Ellen and son William came over on. It shows that Ellen died of "the black bile" on board ship. He was 36, she was 26 and William was 11 months. It landed in New York City. He met and married Anne "Nan" Flaningan (b 3 July 1859, Newbridge, Kildare) in Trenton, New Jersey USA. Anne's parents were Daniel Flanagan and Mary Cuffe, according her marriage license.

All of my Irish ancestors that I have found were RC. I have a lot of their baptismal records and marriage records from RC church records at NLI.

My O'Donnells (O'Donnell, Kennedy, Sullivan, Maunsell, Cicinor) seem to be mostly County Limerick, some (Mary Quane) from County Cork.

My Butler, Teahan, Roche seem to be from County Kerry.

Thank you, I will fill out the meet and greet forms as soon as I can.

Mary:

You and I have the exact same date and church for the marriage except you have Alice Sullivan and the record I located on Roots Ireland was Catherine Sullivan. I went to the actual parish register for Galbally and the entry shows Alice Sullivan. https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632715?locale=en#page/241/mode/1up I will have to contact Roots Ireland for a correction.

Here is the baptismal record I located for November 12 1859 in Mitchelstown for a James O'Donnell with parents Terence O'Donnell and Catherine Sullivan. This couple had at least two other children in Mitchelstown. John 1858 Patrick 1861.

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634793?locale=en#page/92/mode/1up

Here is the Mitchelstown register entry for June 1861 and there were no June 23 baptisms. https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634793?locale=en#page/102/mode/1up

I did find a Terence O'Donnell and Alice Sullivan who had at least seven children from 1859-1876. There was no James but there was a gap from 1859 (Jeremiah) and 1864 (Alex) so maybe the James baptism did not make it to the register.

Roger,

I believe that i found 13 children for Terence O'Donnell & Alice Sullivan in the church records at Galbally & Aherlow. The one for James is attached.

( I think that I will go blind reading the old church records, between the handwriting and going back & forth to Latin. Luckily I took Latin in high school.)

Mary:

Roots Ireland transcribed the father's name as James which explains not finding the record.

I did the meet and greet info, but cannot figure out how to see if there has been any response?

Mary:

I checked the Meet and Greet database and your request is pending (this database is only available to Admins). I will alert our Meet and Greet coordinator about your interest.

Thank you, Roger!

I am also interested in County Kerry...the area around Milltown, Mitcheltown, Anglesboro where I think my Butlers were born/baptized. I believe that James/Jacobus Butler and his wife Joanna Teahan both died in Coolbane, Milltown, County Kerry. He in 1888, she in 1890. Jacobus is the Latinized version of James, Like Darby is Jeremiah, Eugenius is Owen...)
