Black Family-Terrywhinney-Kildress-Tyrone

Hi All, Thank you for the site. We're heading over there next week and I'm trying to confirm evidence that I have that my mother's family came from the townland of Terrywhinney, Kildress, Tyrone. We have documentation of Samuel Black and his wife Jane (Raymond) both born around 1805. Samuel's son John Black left Ireland in 1854 and settled in upper state New York via the St. Lawrence river. Samuel's father was possibly Alexander Black from the Kildress area as well. Any help or suggestions would be welcomed. Thank you!

Griffiths Valuation for 1859 shows Samuel Black as having plot 4 in Terrywinny (spelling varies). That was just under 15 acres, and is still a farm today off the modern Terrywinny Lane. You could call at the farm and see who lives there today.

The Valuation Revision records show the farm passing to Jane around 1881 and then on to William in 1887. William appears to have died intestate on 20.1.1900, according to the PRONI probate records. A James Black of same townland died 2nd Aug 1929 and left a will (which should be in PRONI)

.William’s death aged 57:

Family looks to have been Presbyterian judging by the 1901 census. In 1911 there were 2 Black households there, one Presbyterian and the other of “other persuasion” as they described themselves.

Family seem likely to have attended Orritor Presbyterian church. Its baptism records start in 1831 and marriages in 1827. The only copies of the baptism records and of the pre 1845 marriages are held by the Minister. If you want to search them you would need to contact him/her. Post 1845 marriages are in PRONI and are also on-line on the irishgenealogy site. Presbyterians generally didn't keep burial records.

Adding to the previous message, William Black who inherited the Terrywinny farm was the son of Samuel Black. He married Mary Ann Lennon in 1890:

William died in 1900 as we know. His widow and 5 children were on the farm in the 1901 census.

By 1911 widow Mary Ann and 3 children were on the farm. The census also tells us she had 6 children of whom 5 were still alive.

The Valuation Revision records show Mary Ann as tenant until 1924 when her son William James replaces her. Presumably she died around that time.

The White family tree on Ancestry shows son Samuel emigrated to Australia by 1914 and died in NSW in 1955. He married and had 1 child in Australia who died in 2011.
