Bernard Sloan (or Sloane) Kilkeel, County Down

Looking for any records or ancestors of Bernard Sloan who was baptised in Kilkeel on 4 December 1843 in Kilkeel.

i think Bernard married Mary Fitzpatrick on 20 May 1864, in Ballymartin, County Down although the record for the parents doesn’t accord with the shipping manifest of the “St Hilda” that sailed from Liverpool on 16 September 1864 and arrived in Sydney on 30 January 1865.

The shipping manifest lists Bernard’s parents as Sally (residing in Attical, County Down) & Bryan (deceased).

The wife, Mary and an Irish born daughter, Mary Ann (born 3 June 1865) arrived in Sydney on the “Burlington” on 16 February 1867.

Bernard is my maternal grandfather’s grandfather hence my interest.

Any information gratefully received. I arrive in County Down on 14 March 2025.

Kind regards

The townland that appears on Bernard’s marriage as his residence is Tullyframe. His father is shown as John. Griffiths Valuation of 1863 lists 2 John Sloans in the townland living beside each other (hinting they may be related). There was a John Sloan and a Bernard Sloan farming plot 67, a 10 acres holding. Both have the agnomen or nickname “Owen” after their names to distinguish them from the other John Sloane on plot 68 which was an 8 acre farm. He farmed it jointly with Edward Sloane. The name “Brien” is noted in brackets afterwards. That could be a name he went by or it could be his mother’s maiden name. Both were used by the Griffiths clerks.

Perhaps your ancestor came from one of these 2 farms.

The farms today are either side of the modern Glenloughan Rd, about a quarter of a mile west of where it meets the Tullyframe Rd. Plot 67 looks to still be a working farm. Plot 68 is still farmland but the house and any buildings are long gone. It’s presumably been amalgamated into a bigger farm nearby. You can see where they are using the maps on the Griffiths site:

Here’s the death of 1 John Sloan from Tullyframe in 1871. He was a bachelor which is quite helpful as it presumably eliminates him.

Here’s another in 1898, married to Peggy (Margaret):

In the 1901 census, there were 53 houses in Tullyframe. 17 of them were occupied by Sloan(e) families. Good luck trying to sort them all out.

I can’t offer any firm explanation about why there is a discrepancy between the 2 father’s names, assuming you have the right couple, but where lots of people had the same name in a small area it was common for some to either use nicknames or second names. Possibly John was also known as Bryan?

Sally is a diminutive of Sarah. Not all the deaths for that area are viewable on-line free. Those for 1864 (when death registration began) to 1870 are not available without paying, and there are some after that that should be viewable but are currently not showing. There are a number of Sarah/Sally deaths in the area but you would need to pay to view them on the GRONI site at £2.50 (sterling) a time.

Attical is close to Tullyframe being about a quarter of a mile east of it. The modern Tullyframe Rd leads to Attical. 2 Sloane households there in 1863. John & Ann. No Sally in either Attical or Tullyframe, so either she was dead or not head of household.
