Benson

I am searching for Patrick Benson, born abt 1782 Roscommon, Cork. Married in Canada in 1812. Family lore says he came with either four or five brothers to the USA. Father may have been Benedict Benson and mother Mary Ryan.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland and the earliest Patrick Benson baptismal record in their data base was in 1806. Very few parishes have records back to 1782. There is no Roscommon in Co. Cork. As you probably know, there is a Co. Roscommon which is a good distance away from Co. Cork. The surname Benson was not a common surname in Ireland in the mid-19th century. Co. Sligo and Co. Armagh had hte most Bensons.

Thank you for the info. Family lore also said that hisfather might have been a British soldier sent to Ireland. The mystery continues. It is frustrating as the French side of the family I have traced back to the early 1600.

thank you again.

Hello Ginette,

My name is Helene Carriere daughter of Helene Leontine Benson Carriere I am 65 yrs old. I have always been interested  in finding my ancestors.  My grandfather was Martin Xavier Benson son to James Benson son to John Benson son to Patrick Benson.

The information I have is that a Patrick Benson came from Ireland. He was hired by the British Army to fight in the war of 1812 against the Americans in Ontario. He was a Quartermaster Sergeant in the incorporated militia.  .He was married in Williamstown, ON by Rev  John Bethune, in St-Andrews church in 1812..Apparently he was 30 yrs old then.(unknown place of birth in Ireland). His wife was Catherine Prestley. Because he was a veteran and a sergeant in the army, he received a grant of 300 acres. It was issued to him on the 22nd of february in 1820. His homestead was located 1/4 mile west of Curran on lot 11 and is presently own by Rock Delisle.

He was a farmer and a teacher as well. He started teaching in 1810 and taught in the counties of Stormont and Prescott for 30 yrs until 1845.

Between 1835 and 1844 he was one of three teachers who taught in Pendleton, On.

Patrick's name appeared on the first assessment roll of the townships of Plantagenet, Clarence Cumberland and Gloucester in the District of Ottawa. He was then living with his son William and his family. He was 90 yrs old.

He had 8 children. Cornelius, John, Elizabeth, Louise, William, Samuel, Margaret and Anne.
