Benjamin Baskerville and Rachel

Dear Deborah:

Thanks for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.  I have made some enquiries on your behalf to a local person in the area, and I will post on this thread with their reply.

You might also check the Census records.  I do note that there are two Baskerville families living in the Latteragh Electoral Division in the townland of Ollatrim in 1901.  They are Church of Ireland as their religious denomination.  It would appear that if these families are descendants of the Baskervilles of Castletownarra, they moved out of that area and into Latteragh.

Please consider creating a profile for one of the Baskerville ancestors and posting this on the XO Chronicles tab which is located at the top of the page.  The Ancestor Profiles are very useful as they are updated weekly, are widely read by our members and very often, you may find others who are researching the same family.

If you need any further assistance, please let us know.

All the best,

Jane.

hi, there were a lot of Baskervilles living in the adjoining parish of Youghalarra in the 1800s. The family were Church of Ireland at the beginning of the 1800s and by the mid 1820 they had converted to Catholicism. The family had a pound and also a pub which is currently owned by the Barry family in the village of Newtown. They lived in the townland of Ballyrusheen on the Youghalarra/ Monsea parish border.

As far as I am aware there is nobody with the surname Baskerville living in either parish presently however there are people who are descended from the family. There are also descendents of the Corbetts locally as well.

There is a headstone to three members of the family in the Youghalarra graveyard and you can find the inscription on www.tipperarystudies.ie

Rachel Baskerville who died in 1885 was drowned on 15 August 1885 along with her cousin and four others. you will find a report on this in the Nenagh Guardian and I also found it copied in the US newspapers on fultonpostcards.com.Her cousins name should help to expand your search.

I have also found a reference to an auction of goods from their residence c1900 which would lead me to believe that they sold up and moved out of the area.

A subsciption to www.irishnewspaperarchives.com might be worthwhile to look up the Nenagh Guardian where you should find more family information.

hope that helps somewhat .

If I can help further my email address is bmeatb@gmail.com

regards

Margaret

I should add that Rachels cousin was visiting from Roscrea at the time of her visit

Hi Tippgal,

Thanks so much for your response. I believe my great-grandmother was the daughter of Benjamin Baskerville who had a farm in Pallasbeg for several years. I think he was leasing the land. I get confused about the geography of the area. Pallasbeg or Ballyrushen. If families are descended from the Baskervilles of  Ben Baskerville and Rachel I think they would be distant cousins of mine. Also Corbets who are descended from Baskerville/ Corbet marriages of the Ben Baskerville line.

I was aware of the drowning accident because the sister of my Barry Grandfather was one of girls who drowned, Hanoria. I did find an Irish newspaper report through FindMyPast and discovered it was Hanoria Barry, Rachel Baskerville (daughter of James Baskerville who was my great-grandmother's brother), and Mary Jane Hannon, who I believe is the niece of James Baskerville and Margaret Hannon. So 3 cousins died in that boating accident along with another boy. Hanoria Barry was the only daughter of that family. My Aunt Lenore wrote to me in a letter the history that her father's sister had died in a drowning accident. It was really bad that it was 3 girls, cousins too. James Baskerville was killed in some kind of fight at the age of 29. His wife Margaret died at an early age too which could have been the result of losing her daughter and husband.

I do know about the Barry pub. What is a pound? I am wondering how to best contact the owner of the pub. I do have a cell phone number. I think it is James (Jim) Barry who is the grandson of James Barry who was another of my grandfather's brothers. My grandfather lost touch with his family from what my aunt told me. Her mother also a Barry, Nora Barry, did correspond with her family. And my Aunt Lenore corresponded with a cousin Margaret Barry ( I think on her mother's side of the family) Margaret lived in Ballinamore, Newtown, Nenagh. She is deceased but I think I found her through my research. She had a brother Garrett who is also now deceased. Their parents were John Barry and Catherine Condon.

I would like to establish contact with the Barry or Baskerville descendants of my family if they are willing to correspond a little. Also my children and grandchildren would learn about our family. There is a disconnected feeling when you are the descendents of immigrants. There is lost history.

Thanks so much again and for the email contact.

Deborah

Hi Tippgal,

I forgot to mention. I am trying to find out if Richard Baskerville (about 1801 married to Mary Morris) and George Baskerville(1807 married to Mary McDonnell) were brothers of Benjamin Baskerville (abt.1800). I put them on my tree because both had named a daughter Rachel. George named his first daughter Rachel and a son Benjamin. George emigrated to Canada with his family.

Hi Deborah,

I have a Sarah Baskerville in my family who married Patrick Delany in a house Drom and Inch Co Tipperary on 20 October 1834. Would you know if this is the same Sarah in your family?

Mary O'Brien

Hi Mary,

The earliest Sarah Baskerville I have on my tree was born in 1837. And I don't know for sure she is the daughter of Benjamin Baskerville and Mary Corbet. I found a church baptism record for Sarah Baskerville 28 May 1827, born 26 Apr 1837 on rootsireland.ie. It lists her father as Benjamin Baskerville and her mother as Mary. The only thing is she is baptised in Church of Ireland in Templeharry. So it is possible she does not belong on my tree. I saw the marriage record on rootsireland.ie for S Baskerfield and Patrick Delany in Drom but it does not list the parents.

This Sarah married in 1834 would have to be around the same age as Benjamin Baskerville the father or a bit younger, more like a sister. I do not have a record of a sister Sarah. So the answer is I don't think she is on my tree right now. I have questioned if William Baskerville belongs on my tree, and have removed him, as a son of Benjamin and Mary because I have not found a birth record or baptism record. He had a daughter Sarah born in 1872. There was a Frances Baskerville who had a daughter Sarah ( he is not on my tree), his Sarah was born in 1889.

Do you have a baptism or birth record for your Sarah Baskerville? that shows her parents names.

Deborah

Hi Deborah,

I am currently doing some genealogy on my family and found that Rachel Baskerville was my great great grandmother aswell.  Whilst doing the research the name Baskerville stood out.  It came as a shock to read that she had sadly drowned.   Her daughter Catherine married my great grandfather John Ryan and they moved to England where John joined the British Army. They moved back to Ireland in 1900 where my Great Grandfather worked at Mountjoy Prison.  I've got old newspaper cuttings of one of their children and the death of John.  Are you on Ancestry?  We may join up if you are.  My DNA is due back soon.  My email address is sa.mcguinness20@gmail.com.  I would like to read any articles on Rachel and Benjamin.  All the best Sarah McGuinness

Hi, Rachel Baskerville, who drowned in 1885, was unmarried. I think that you may have gotten two different Rachel's mixed up. You can view her death cert on www.irishgenealogy.ie ;

Kind regards

Margaret

Hi Sarah,

I just saw your message and I don't think I was notified of it before this time. The Rachel Baskerville you are talking about was my great-grandmother. She was not the one who drowned. That was her niece, another Rachel Baskerville, who had never married. She drowned when she was around 18 yrs.old. along with my great-aunt Honora Barry. That is intersting information about Catherine Hogan and John Ryan. I do have them on my tree but did not know they moved to England and the rest. I would like to more about them. I did trace the brothers of Catherine Hogan to Australia. They were Patrick and Thomas Hogan. I lost track of Patrick but found a descendant of Thomas. There was a sister Mary Hogan who I think married a John Hogan. I will try to contact you. I am on Ancestry.

Regards,

Deborah
