Anthony Vasey, born 2 May 1879

Hello,

I am interested in any information about Anthony Vasey, the twin brother of my grandfather James Vasey. Anthony's parents were Patrick and Margaret Vasey, and he was born in Derreen, near Ballaghaderreen. I suspect he emigrated to the United States around the year 1900.

NB the Irish genealogical records report the family surname in 1879 as Vasey, alternatively Veasy, but in the 20 century the surname has always been rendered as Vesey.

Many thanks for any assistance, Michael Toolan

Michael,

On the Ellis Island website (heritage.statueofliberty.org), you can see the Campania ship's manifest. The ship arrived 1 Apr 1905, and Anthony arrived with his 21 year old sister Bridget. The friend they were going to in New York was a Mrs. Dowd at 211 East 88th St.

Carolyn

I checked Ancestry and couldn't find more info on Anthony. Brigid, per birth record born 1881, married Michael O'Grady in 1919, in Solvay, Onondaga, New York where they lived.

Dear Mary, Carolyn, and McCoy,

Thank you sooo much for this information about Anthony Vesey, my great uncle (and sorry for my delayed acknowledgment). All the American information is new to me and invaluable. I will see now if I can find out more about Michael and Bridget (nee Vesey) O'Grady, and whatever happened to Anthony after he arrived in NYC in 1905.

According to my late uncle Martin (younger brother of my mother, Catherine, and son of James Vesey, Anthony's twin), Thomas, Anthony and Bridget all left for America at some point, never to return. Your information confirms this for Anthony and Bridget. Thomas I think would have gone across a few years earlier.

many thanks again, Michael

Michael,

I don't know if you are interested in expanding your family tree to include cousins of Thomas Vesey, but on Ancestry, while looking for your Thomas, I came across many records for another Thomas Vesey who is also from Derreen, married in Ireland, and then emigrated to the US. HIS parents are Anthony Vesey (maybe a brother to your Patrick) and Anne Towey. This Thomas was born 5 Dec 1873 and married in 1911 in Ballaghaderreen to Honoria (Norah) Towey. Yes, same surname as his mother. There are US immigration records from 1936 showing Honoria and daughter Mary E. going to Scarsdale, NY to be with Thomas. I have attached that record. Ancestry shows that the two children of Anthony Vesey and Honoria Towey were Mary Ellen Vesey (1911) and James Vesey.

Regards,

Carolyn

Carolyn,

Thank you very much for that further information. That's very interesting and I will add it to the tree. In particular I'll try to establish if Anthony is a brother of Patrick (John) Vesey. It is very possible. A Towey family were close neighbours of the Veseys in Dernacartha part of Kilcolman, and their names are adjacent on Griffiths.

thanks again,

Michael
