Annaghdown Families to Durham, England

Hello,

I am corresponding with several researchers all of who, as am I, are looking at some families in the Winlaton, Blaydon, etc. Durham, England vicinity.  These families descend from a number of instances of families or individuals who emigrated from the Annaghdown and Lackagh (and vicinity) areas to Durham.

In my case it begins with a couple named Patrick Allen (1824-1905, orig from Aucloggeen, I believe - son of William and Elizabeth Allen) and Bridget Scully (1824-1904, who we believe is the daughter of a Thomas Scully).  Patrick and Bridget appear to have been married in Annaghdown, had their first two children baptized there (Elizabeth 1847, Sabina 1850) and then lived for a time in Kildare (Raheens) where they baptized two sons (Thomas 1851, John 1853) before making their way to Winlaton, Durham, England where they had several more children (Patrick 56, Henry 58, Margaret 60, Margaret 61, Mary 63, Andrew "Sandy" 65).

The other case involves an Honora Scully (1826-1908) who we believe to be Bridget's sister.  She first had a son (Thomas 1856, Winlaton) to a David MaGuire who died before the child was born.  She later married a Michael Dooley (1825-1891).

There are other Scullys found in the same area of Durham in the latter half of the 19th Century that appear also to be siblings to "our" Scullys: Andrew born 1816 and married to a Bridget Leonard, Edward L born 1818.

A variety of names that crop up in the records include Welsh/Walsh and Murphy and there are strong indications that these may be the maiden name(s) of the mothers of either Patrick Allen or Bridget Allen and her presumed siblings.  Other names that are associated by Scully/Allen marriages in Durham seem to also have connections back to the Annaghdown vicinity including Larner/Lardner, Fahey, etc.

If any ot this seems to connect to someone's research or "rings a bell" in anyway, I would be very interested to compare notes.

Patrick Murphy, Chicago, IL

(PS I am not descended from the Murphys noted above but Murphys of County Cork - my connection to this listing is through the Allens - a Mary Allen who married a Patrick McHale in Annaghdown in 1841)

Hi Patrick,

Thank you very much for your message. You have done a great job so far- I hope that someone else researching the family makes a connection with you to share information.

Best wishes,

Hi, just found your site. I believe Edward L. Scully is my fourth great uncle. I have his parents were Andrew Scully and Jane Patterson and siblings Peter, Thomas, Andrew, and Patrick. Many of my relatives lived in Gateshead, Durham, then Wigan, and finally to Bentley (Doncaster) where I was born. Could you clarify this information. Thanks.

Steve,

I got a notice of your post re: the Scullys of Gateshead, Wigan, etc.  It may be that the Edward L Scully that you note (4th great uncle) is the same as the Edward L Scully in my earlier post.  The birth year is comparable in both cases.  For some reason in the family tree that I am working on I have Edward's (and his siblings) father listed as Thomas.  It has been a while since I did that so I need to review.  It could be because in my research the first sons born to Edward's generation were Thomas.  It may also be something I picked up from another person researching these Scullys - I had some communication with a couple of people tied to these families (Scully, Allen, Welsh/Walsh, etc.)

Based on what you listed for parents - Andrew Scully and Jane Patterson - I did some looking around and there are several family trees on Ancestry.com that have varying versions of a family born to an Andrew Scully and Jane Patterson, some of which include an Edward born +/1815-1818.  Are you on Ancestry.com?  These trees show the family coming, originally, from Antrim.  However, at least one of them is also listing Andrew has being born in 1805 and having children in 1810, etc. - so needs some work.

The families I am looking at all originated in the area of Annaghdown. I have no proof, I believe, that the Scullys are from Annaghdown - but there are certainly numerous Scully families from that Parish.  The Allens that I am looking at are definitely from Annaghdown, and the Welsh/Walsh, Leonard and other families are all most likely from Annaghdown.

What more can you tell me about your Scullys?

Thanks,

Patrick Murphy

About all I know - most of which I found on Ancestry and as you have found there is some variations/contradictions - are from Carlow or Antrim.  I haven't yet looked at the geography of Ireland to any great extent at this point.  I investigate as I go on. My uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather were all Thomas so at one point I thought Andrew was incorrect. I did find one tree that had two spouses for Edward L, one being Catherine Sheehan and the other unknown. If you have any insight, I would appreciate it.

Greetings from New Zealand. Patrick I have read your post with interest and see it is almost a year to the day since it was posted. I hope you are still getting notifications of new posts.

My interest lies both in Annaghdown and in Winlaton/Blaydon co. Durham. My GG Grandfather Francis GREANEY/GREANY married Catherine LANGAN in 1840 in Annaghdown and they had two sons (probably more) Michael b 1845 and Patrick b c1851. Both boys were in Winlaton on their own by 1871. Michael married Sabina SCULLY in 1871, and Patrick married Mary CONWAY (date escapes me at present).  Michael and Sabina immigrated to NZ in 1874.

Sabina’s marriage and death certificates say she was born in Winlaton Durham, but the census indicates Ireland. 1861 UK census shows Andrew SCULLY aged 35, Bridget 40, Sabina 10 and Thomas 7. But by 1871 we have Andrew aged 55, Bridget 45, Sabina/Sophia 18, Thomas 16, John 3 Hannah 2. I believe Andrew was married twice, both wives called Bridget!!  Working backwards from here is more difficult as there appears to be a lot of conflicting data.  Second wife Bridget was Bridget LEONARD and likely her father was John LEONARD – I have no further information on this line. But I think my lot are your “other SCULLY’s.  But I am intrigued with the similarity of names in the Patrick and Bridget ALLEN family with my own Andrew and Bridget family.  Is there a connection or were they just common names?

I have had some correspondence over the years with other Scully researchers and the closest I have found to be logical is the following.

Andrew SCULLY 1790 married Jane PATTERSON, 12 Nov 1805

They had possibly 5 children- Peter 1806, Thomas 1811, Andrew 1813, Patrick 1814, Edward L 1818.

I have no further information to hand on Peter, Thomas or Patrick.

Andrew is my line.

Edward L; had three boys, Edward 1848, Peter 1834, James 1838.

Back to Bridget (2) and Andrew’s children John and Hannah – both move to the USA and settled in New York. Hannah never married but from memory John could have been a widower with 2 or 3 children. Thomas I think stayed in the UK but I could be wrong.

Unfortunately I don’t have any Welsh/Walsh/Murphy names to help you with. My current challenge is to find a connection with Scully/Cunningham/Hinchey families.

If I can be of any help feel free to contact me off line.

Hi, Im a decendent of Edward Scully (1818), my Gt, Gt, Gt Grandfather. He's not Edward L that was my original mistake on Ancestry. I was looking at a marriage certificate which actually says Edwardi - which is Latin for Edward - I mis transcribed it as Edward L. The 3 siblings who settled in the Durham area are James Scully (1838 - 1898), Patrick Scully (1848 - 1908) and Mary Scully (1854 -1919)- they all list Edward as father on their marriage certificated.

James, his second wife Catherine Sheehan and 4 sons (to his first wife Bridget Feeny)all moved to Indiana and settled there.

Patrick settled in County Durham and had a large family (my Gt Gt Grandfather).

Mary Married Michael Mullen and settled in Sunderland.

Looking into Andrew Scully and Bridget Leonard and the possibility of another marriage to have produced the eldest two children. I found this as a possible first husband for Bridget Leonard but the marriage is still after the birth of her first two children.  Bridget LeonardGender:FemaleMarriage Date:23 Jun 1855Marriage Place:St. Cuthbert, Durham, Durham, EnglandFather:James Leonard Mother:Margaret Spouse:Michael Smith FHL Film Number:2082455Reference ID:it 6

Peter Scully (1832 - 1908) m Anne Norton In Carlow Ireland and moved to Durham before 1881. I cant find a marriage record showing Peter's parents but I'm sure this is the link...bear with me........

His eldest Daughter Johanna Scully (1851) is living with her Aunt Mary Scully (1831) m Martin Kehoe in the 1871 Census in the Liverpool area. Mary's Marriage certificate lists Bernard Scully and Johanna as her parents.

Bernard Scully (abt 1802)  m Johanna Rouke (abt 1802)

Bernard Scully (b1837) m Catherine Curran - Their marriage record shows Bernard Scully's Parents to be Bernard Scully (1802) and Johanna Rouke.

In the 1891 Census he is living with his nephews Peter Scully (1866)  and Michael Scully (1868).

Michael Scully m Catherine McGrath and in the 1901 cenus he is living with his wife and child Bernard Vincet Scully and a  Mathew Scully (1873) who is listed as a boarder but has the same birth year as his brother, Mathew Michael and Peter Scully are all sons of Bernard Scully and Catherine Curran (birth and baptism records).

Michael settled in Sunderland,

Peter 1866 possibly settled in New Zealand but I've not found a definate link.

Matthew went back to Carlow, Ireland.

If this is correct, and they are indeed nephews and brothers, Bernard (1837), Peter (1832) and Mary (1832) would be siblings and children of Bernard Scully (1802) and Johanna Rouke and can be linked by their family lodging with them and marriage certificates.

Where I think there could be possible links are that Andrew Scully (1826)  m Bridget Leonard could possibly be a brother of either Edward Scully (1818), Bernard (1802) or a brother of Bernard (1837), Peter (1832)  and Mary (1832). But I cant find anything concrete to link them.

If you are on Ancestry Sharon Sweetings Tree has lots of links that are speculation. It's not a criticism but the tree looks like its a work in progress with all possible links (not actual). My original tree was the same and seems to have caused a lot of confusion. My User name on there is cath8681. I've made The Scully Family Tree public so you can see the links and documents I have. It's not quite finished. I've also got a private tree called North East Scully's where I'm working on links. I update The Scully tree as I find them.

Hope this helps.

Greetings,

I am a descendant of Andrew Scully and Bridget Leonard (Lennard), and I'm sure I have at some time or other had contact with the above researcher, -hello again.   I have from time to time delved into the Scully research but all too often it has gone into the too hard basket. However having said that I have made some small gains.  I now have doubts as to whether Andrew (1813-16 birth years differ) did in fact marry twice.  I have found a record of Sabina's baptism in the Catholic Parish Registers. July 29 1852, Sibby of Andrew Scully and Bridget Leonard. The sponsors surnames are harder to read. The register according to Findmypast is for Tuam Galway. There is a small descrepancy in the date as we always believed Sabina's birthdate was 1st August - I suspect as time went by this date was just accepted.  From this I have drawn the conclusion that Andrew and Bridget were together married or not at the time of Sabinas birth. Thomas has been harder to find in the registers mainly because there are so many. Moving forward to their settlement in Durham,it appears that Andrew and Bridget married here but dates contradict with Sabina's baptism in Irelend. Hannah's baptism is clearly May 2 1869 in St Cuthberts Durham and Andrew and Bridget (Brigittae) are named as parents, although no maiden name is recorded for Bridget. I believe at least until further evidence comes to light that the children of Andrew; Sabina, Thomas, Hannah, and John all have the same mother - Bridget Leonard.

Who is my Andrew's father - that's still a question to be answered and confirmed. There is Thomas who died in Ireland before 1865, and is conected to Patick Murphys family or Andrew c1790 who I think is connected to Edward (Edwardi), Peter, Thomas and Patrick. No doubt patience will be rewarded eventually.  Happy researching to all,

Mary -sometimes Greycloud!

Just to check - is anyone still following this thread?

I've just found it (and this site) through a google search. I'm descended from Patrick Allen and Bridget Scully (my 3ggrandparents) and trying to find out more!

If anyone's interested, I'm happy to share what I've got through Ancestry.

Nick,

There hasn't been any activity in the conversation for a number of years - but I'm still following it.  I'm the original poster, and Patrick Allen who married Bridget Scully was the brother of my 3g grandmother meaning our common ancestors are their parents - ie our 4g-grandparents, so that would make us fifth cousins.  I am on Ancestry.com, and I believe I have your parents in my tree.  They married in Durham in 1961, is that right?  In my tree, your mother shows up as my 4th cousin, 1x removed (so, yes, you and I would be 5th cousins).   Just found your mother in my DNA matches on Ancestry.  I have her profile linked into may tree, actually.  The largest shared match that she and I have is Chris Moore and it says he would be you mother's 1st cousin, 2x removed.

I would be very interested in comparing notes with you.
