Andrew and Anastasia (Murphy) Redmond -- Cty Wexford to Canada

Andrew Redmond, born 1788, and Anastasia Murphy b. 1794, were both "nativeof Wexford", according to their joint gravestone in Frampton, Quebec, Canada. I am trying to determine their home town/parish in Cty Wexford and any information about their parents, siblings, and emigration.

I believe they emigrated from Cty. Wexford to Canada in 1826 with the first of their children, Andrew b. 1820 and Margaret b. 1823. They had six more children in Frampton (Bridget 1827, twins James andThomas 1831, William 1834, twins John and Peter 1838). My great grandparents Child #7 John emigrated from Canada to Massachusetts with wife Catherine Anastasia Roche by 1902.

I understand available resources are limited for this early time period, but there may be some information in local parish/diocese offices. Canada's national archives has no useful information on ship passenger lists for the time. I will be in Wexford briefly in June 2018. Any direction on where best to pursue my search would be most welcome.

thank you.

As you already suspected the early date is going to be a problem - assuming your Redmond/Murphy family were Catholic - the average starting date for parish records in rural areas is about 1830. Some towns have records for much earlier dates - e.g. records for Wexford town go back to abt 1671. A further complication is that the surname Redmond is very common in Co. Wexford, while Murphy was the most common surname in Ireland in the 1800s.

Images of registers for most of the Catholic parishes in Ireland are available on the National Library website, and the same records are indexed and can be searched on FindMyPast and Ancestry.

I had a search for the two children you mentioned baptized in Ireland but no promising matches showed up.

p.s. a couple of Redmond/Murphy early baptisms, 1807-1827, show up in searches of RC records for Co. Wexford, but none with father Andrew or mother Anastasia

Ah, well, you've confirmed my efforts and suspicions. Thank you anyway, Sahnew147!

If you do get to Co. Wexford there's plenty to see - including the Dunbrody which was used to bring passangers across the Atlantic just two decades after your ancestors travelled. It's a replica of a famine era ship, and it's based in New Ross, a port likely used by your Redmond/Murphy family. It was away for renovation when I was there over the winter, so check before visiting.

Thanks for the tip, Shanew147. It's high on my list. - I've been perusing the Catholic parish registers and found a possible sister of Andrew's. In 1814 a Mary Redmond married a George Duff. The name Duff is in my family with one of Andrew's sons, John, marrying Bridget Duff, b. 1835, in 1863. Small pieces in a big puzzle!

shanew147, can you help me read old penmanship in a burial record entry? I think the entry at line 3 at

< https://search.findmypast.ie/record?id=ire%2fprs%2fmicrofilm04247-08%2f… > may be my GGGgrandfather. Can you make out the first name, /something/ Redmond, Taghmon, age 76? A transcription comes across as "Gulid", but I wonder. With unusual names and odd/abbreviated spellings, I'm at a loss. Any help is much appreciated. -- Alice

ARedmond

I think what this record reads is 'The Wid.. Redmond' - so probably the widow Redmond. It looks like the ink faded out during the 'T' - the top looks the same as the T in Taghmon, particularly the one on the next line.

shanew147IrelandXO Volunteer

Thanks, shanew147! I finally concluded it's "The Wid(ow)" as well, after staring at the entry for a long time. Can I ask two more questions? NLI page < https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634089#page/4/mode/1up > The 3rd entry is for Andreas (Andrew) Redmond. I read the next part as "de Garridonnel"--is that a town name? current? And more critical is the father's name ("P" for pater) Gulid. The same name appears on the next line for the baby and father. Is this a real name, an abbreviation, a Latinized form, or what? Thank you so much in advance.

ARedmond

I'll have to have a look, but initial impression is that it is a placename, the 'de' being of.  The format for this register seems to be date, children's name and surname, 'of ' placename, then father's first name mother's full name, and next line is godparents (sponsors)

shanew147IrelandXO Volunteer

A little easier than I thought it was going to be  - Litter Catholic parish covered three civil parishes Kilmuckridge, Monamolin and Killincooly. One of the townlands in Monamolin is Garrydaniel so pretty certain that the mystery word. Looks like it's recorded here as Garridanniel

shanew147IrelandXO Volunteer

You handled that one pretty easily! Any thought on the other mystery word "Gulid"? Thanks again!

ARedmond

All I can think of for 'Gulid' is some sort of abbreviation of the Latin for William - i.e. 'Guillelmus', the name appears on a number of the records on page so would fit with a common firstname like William. The only other names that have vaguely similar Latin versions would be far less common names like Godfrey, Gilbert etc

I'll try a few search options and see if I can come up with anything further...

shanew147IrelandXO Volunteer

shanew147, you are brilliant, and I have now come across other instances of "Guliellmus". I'll go with that and see where it takes me on this crazy adventure. Thanks so much!

Dear ARedmond:

You might also be interested to know that there will be a Redmond Clan Gathering in Wexford in April 2019.

The group that is putting this together is running a festival next month in Wexford and you can see the details of same here:

http://www.loftushall.ie

I have forwarded your query to one of the organisers who has contacts with researchers in Wexford who are actively involved in the Clan gathering and you might hear from them directly.

Kind regards,

Jane.

jhalloranryan@…

Jane, thank you so much for this. I know the Redmond name is big in Wexford. However I've been assuming that I am not really linked to the Loftus Hall part of the Redmonds and the famous politicians, since my direct ancestor left for Canada ~1826. But they must have left some family behind.

I will be in Wexford for two days in June 2018, maybe looking for ghosts!

Thank you!

I’m looking for a Moses Redmond who married Rebecca Dunn. They were born around 1770 in Northern Ireland and moved over to Nova Scotia, Canada. They were my 6th great grandparents and I come down their son, David’s, line. My late grandfather, Gerald Peter Redmond, was the first generation of my Redmonds to move down here to the Boston, Massachusetts, USA area in the late 1920’s. I’m attempting to connect the dots. Thanks!

peppermintcaro…

Moses Redmond and Rebecca Dunn must be from another branch of Redmonds from my Wexford-based family. MyHeritage (and I expect Ancestry) has a record of Moses, born in Ballmena, County Antrim. The route to Nova Scotia and then down to Massachusetts must have been popular--my mother's ancestors (Bonia) took the same route. Sorry I could not make a connection.

ARedmond,

My name is Richard Redmond born 1979 in Sept- Iles Quebec Canada, Son of James Redmond born 1953 in Baie-Comeau Quebec Canada, Son of John Redmond born 1953 in Franlin Quebec Canada, Son of John A Redmond born 1933 Franklin Quebec Canada, Son of Andrew P Redmond born 1902 Frampton Quebec, Son of John Redmond born 1865 Frampton Quebec Canada, Son of John Redmond 1837 Frampton Quebec Canada, Son of Andrew Redmond born 1788 Wexford Ireland.  My question is if your great grandparents Child #7 John emigrated from Canada to Massachusetts with wife Catherine Anastasia Roche by 1902 this would mean he has done so after having a son in 1865 who would have stayed in Frampton Quebec Canada. Also his grand child Andrew P Redmond was born in 1902 inn Frampton Quebec.

Do have any knowleaged of John Redmond's (born 1837) children?

Richard Redmond

Hi, Richard,

Sorry I hadn't noticed this until now--especially since this seems to be a real connection, going back to "Andrew Redmond born 1788 Wexford Ireland." My record for Andrew shows him born Dec. 6, 1789--probably an insignificant variation. He was born in Litter parish, Kilmuckridge or Monamolin civil parish, Ferns diocese. I show his father to be William (Latin Guliellmus on Andrew's baptismal record), born ~1765, and mother to be Hannah (no info). I haven't found any earlier information about the family.

I show Andrew to be married to Anstace/Anstasia Murphy. Their children: Andrew ~1820, Margaret 1823--both born in Wexford. The small family emigrated in 1826 and later kids reflect a move from Quebec City to settling in Frampton: Bridget 1827; James 1831; Thomas 1831-1832; William 1834; Peter May 16 1838-1840; twin John Morgan Redmond May 16, 1838, died Dec 31 1907. Could this John be the one you're asking about? He married Bridget Duff, also born in Frampton.

John and Bridget married in 1863 and had Andrew 1864, John Jr. 1865, Thomas 1869, Anastasia 1871, Mary 1873 (died in infancy), William Francis 1874, William T. 1875 (I don't know about these 2 Williams), Margaret 1877, Mary Ann 1880. The firstborn son Andrew married Catherine Roche (born in Cork) in 1901 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and settled there. These were my grandparents, though I never met them. All of their 4 children (my dad John Andrew, his sisters Mary and Catherine [died at age 102], and brother Stephen) were born in Cambridge, Mass.

Yes, John Sr.1838 and Bridget's son John Jr. 1865 (whom I show as #2 of 10 kids) was born and died in Frampton. His sister Anastasia seems to have gone south to Weston, Massachusetts, but back to Frampton where she died. I also show sister Margaret as spending some time in Massachusetts.

There's an issue with your account: "My question is if your great grandparents Child #7 John emigrated from Canada to Massachusetts with wife Catherine Anastasia Roche by 1902 this would mean he has done so after having a son in 1865" -- John Jr. 1865 was born in Quebec, the son of John Sr. 1838 and Bridget (Duff). Catherine Roche who was married to Andrew 1864, older brother of John Jr.

In you tree you also list John, born in 1953 in Franlin (just on the border with New York), and James, also born 1953 in Baie-Comeau. Could the dates be wrong, or could they be twins (there are twins in the lineage)--but birthplaces would be off.

To answer your question about "John Redmond's (born 1837) children"....Are you aware of the book Irish Needles: Genealogy Compendium of the Frampton Irish, by Dennis McLane? It's 3 volumes, #3 being last names L-Z. On p 252 it lists John 1938 and Bridget's family (all born in Frampton) as Andrew 1863 (moved to Santa Clara CA), John 1865 (married Margaret Furlong 1893 and then Winnifred Magher 1907, and stayed in Frampton), James 1867, Thomas 1869 (died in Riviere Que Barre, Alberta), Anastasia 1871, Mary 1873, William Francis 1874, Margaret 1877 (married William J. Meagher), and Mary Ann 1880 (married William Kelly). The book also says: "John Redmond received a new title to land at NW of lot #22 of Range 5 of Frampton Township from the representative of the late Edouard Desbarats on Dec. 10, 1873, before Notaire Desire Larue. In that document, the land was identified as previously owned by his father, Andrew Redmond. John Redmond made an agreement for use of his land for a timber purchase at lot #26 of Range 5 of Frampton Township with Jean Lapierre, representing George Benson Hall, on Oct. 29, 1874, before Notaire Gustave Olivier Taschereau. John Redmond bought some land at lot #16 of Range 5 in Frambton Township from Bridget Walsh on Sept. 10, 1879, before Notaire Joseph Reny. John Redmnd is listed in the 1881 Census as a farmer in Frampton." - I recommend you prowl around http://www.framptonirish.com/frampton/whats_new.cfm . There's a huge amount of information there.

So my question for you: going back earlier, do you know anything about "Andrew Redmond born 1788" (or 1789), his siblings or more about his parents William/Guliellmus and Hannah in Garridaniel/Litter/Kilmuckridge/Monamolin, County Wexford? Going through baptismal records, I found sisters Mary 1795 and Margaret 1796, but I know nothing more. Interestingly, this is the time of the 1789 Rebellion at Ferns, which could affect the continuation of the family.

I live in New Mexico, leaving Massachusetts in 1975. Where in Quebec are you from....and do you mind if I call you "cousin"? :) Have you done DNA testing? I did a few months ago and am getting sporadic reports of connections, several in Canada, but I don't know much about them.

Dear Alice,

Awesome. You are giving lots of information. Indeed i have made a typo in the dates. My father James Redmond born 1953 in Baie-Comeau,Quebec, My Grandfather John Redmond 1933 in Franquelin, Quebec.

I know very little about Andrew Redmond born 1788. This is what actually opened up the can worms. As I was parousing around and what through me off was noticing that, as you wrote,"My great grandparents Child #7 John emigrated from Canada to Massachusetts with wife Catherine Anastasia Roche by 1902." That would have made him 64 years old when he made the move. So ... Since John Redmond (1837 or 1838 Frampton) was my grandfathers' great grandfather im wondering did he have kids again once he moved to the states or did your grand father moved to the states with his dad from Frampton?

I will definitivley look into the links you have provided. All of this information is intersting and much appreciated. I am originally from Port-Cartier Quebec, and keeping true to my roots I too have moved around quite a bit and now settled in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

I will keep in touch "cousin" ;)

Richard Redmond

Dear Cousin Alice,

Let me start this over.

I have gone through your previous posts and wrapped my head arround this. I have obtained a typed copy of my fathers'  grandfathers'  family tree written by his hand. So being that his grand father, SON of Andrew Redmond (1788 Wexford, Ireland) was still alive, and every one else as well, all lived in the same town at the time he wrote this, I assume it is accurate as one can hope it to be.

So that being said let's start with your grand parents. John Redmond and Bridget Duff did marry in 1863/01/27 and had children. Theese are the dates I have :

John Redmond 1865/02/16 - James Redmond 1867 - Thomas Redmond 1869 - Anastasia Redmond 1870 - Mary 1873 (died same year) - William Redmond 1875 - Margaret Redmond 1877 - Marry Ann Redmond 1878 - Andrew Redmond 1880

As you can see our records have the same names but the birth year of Andrew Redmond is off by 20 years and the others are within a year or the same. This is where our lineage seperates. You are from Andrew Redmond (1880 or 1864 ) and I from John Redmond (1865) both sons of John Redmond (1837-1907) And Bridget Duff (1835-1915). This also happens to be where our lineage connects. We have the same line starting from them.

I originally started doing research to find out who was above Andrew Redmond (1788 ) from Wexford Ireland. I am extremly pleased that you have found out who the father of our forfathers happens to be. William ( Guliellmus) Redmond 1765. Sure raises lots of questions about where do we go from here.

I would like to exchange emails if possible so that I can send you my document and receive a copy of the ones you have. I will provide you with my phone information as well with in the e-mail. I have to say this has all been a pleasnt surprise and I look towards our future conversations.

Regards,

Richard Redmond

Wow, Richard! I'll continue via email, but invite anyone else following this to jump in, as well. The key thing I can toss into this conversation is that I suspect Andrew Redmond--your John Redmond (1865)'s brother Andrew was actually the first born, in 1864, because of the Irish naming pattern. You may know it, so maybe repeating here will benefit someone else. It's not rigid but was very commonly followed and can provide a clue for following lineages.

  • 1st son was named after the father’s father
  • 2nd son was named after the mother’s father
  • 3rd son was named after the father
  • 4th son was named after the father’s eldest brother
  • 1st daughter was named after the mother’s mother
  • 2nd daughter was named after the father’s mother
  • 3rd daughter was named after the mother
  • 4th daughter was named after the mother’s eldest sister

In our case, John and Andrew's father was John 1838, and their grandfather was Andrew/Andreas 1789. As I said, the pattern is not written in stone but widely followed.

See you in emaill.

Woah, so much great info!
My late paternal grandfather's name was Gerald Peter Redmond and he had an older brother named William. They were both born in the very early 1900's (1902-1907ish), but I can't seem to figure out which Redmond family they belonged to. I'm guessing their father would have been born between 1860-1880. My grandfather moved down from Canada to Somerville, Massachusetts in the late 1920's, where our extended family remains in that area today.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Carol,

With time on our hands during the coronavirus shut-down, I'm revisiting old genealogy posts to see if anything new has developed. Have you found any more about your GF Gerald Peter Redmond? Whoa, I was just about to write I have nothing more to offer, but went back to search MyHeritage and found the top two are Gerald.

1---Birth Dec 21 1905, Halifax, Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada; Age at Death 66 years; Marriage to: Mabel Etta Redmond (born Corbin)(1906-1996) in Somerville, Middlesex County, Massachusetts; Death Sep 1972 in Somerville... Children: Gerald, X Robinson, X Naugler, X Redmond, X Farwell. (First/full names can't be given until death or 100 yrs after birth). This is from a Canning website, managed by Kerr Dooley.

2---The 2nd one is slightly different. It includes two birth dates: June 24 1904 in Halifax, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and Dec 21 1905 in Halifax. Residence USA; Civil 1904 (I have no idea what that is); Marriage to Mabel Etta Redmond (born Corbin)(1906-1996) Circa 1929 in Summerville, Nova Scotia, Canada; Death Sep 27 1972 in Somerville, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA (I think the variations on Summer/Somerville are suspect). Four unnamed children.

A Wikitree (free resource) entry shows a Gerald P. Redmond born 1904, died 1972, as recalled by Carol (Farwell) Kelly. Brother of William Redmond.

Gerald's and William's parents: John David Redmond (born Halifax ~Dec 4, 1880, died 1910 Nova Scotia and Lillian Elizabeth (Connors) Redmond (born Halifax Oct 10, 1875, died Halifax Jan 27, 1953.

John David's parents: Lawrence J. Redmond b 1860, d 1914, and Mary Elizabeth McDonald Redmond, born ~1860.

Lawrence J's parents: David Redmond b 1823 in Carrickfergus, Cty Antrim and Anne Furlong Redmond b 1828 Nova Scotia, d 1904 in Chelsea, MA.

David Redmond II's parents: David Redmond b 1798 Carrickfergus, Cty Antrim, and Margaret Henry Redmond

David Redmond I's parents: Moses Redmond b 1770 in Ballymena, Cty Antrim, and Rebecca Dunn Redmond b 1774.

How's that? I know it's been a while, but I hope you're still watching this spot!

Hey there, long time no see the boards!
Thank you for all the info and the one from carol farwell kelly is my contributions. Unfortunately, I couldn't confirm them and I've yet to find a Redmond DNA match, even though I just received more from a 23& me test. Ancestry was my first try. How funny is it that I have hundreds of matches on my late Dad's side in all four direct lines, lots of matches on my Mom's maternal side, yet not one from her Dad's family, the ever elusive Redmonds. Sigh..... I recently found a record that my grandfather (Gerald Peter Redmond) mom is listed as Lily Redmond with father named Thomas Redmond from Ireland. Does that mean my grandfather may have been born out of wedlock? Hmmm.... So now I'm looking for Thomas Redmonds born between 1850-1860 as Lily Redmond was born in 1880 and came over to Canada as a "housekeeper." Thank you for your time  ~ carol

peppermintcaro…

Hi, Carol,

It's all made more difficult when you realize Redmond was the 2nd most common name in the area of northern Cty Wexford in that time period, second only to Murphy. And of course, the Andrew Redmond we started this with, my GGGF, married a Murphy.

Good luck on your search for Thomas and Lily!
