Richard Bradburn and Margaret Mcdowell Bradburn were my 3x greatgrandparents Am descended from son George who emigrated to Australia. I have above information but can't reconcile Margaret's birth dates 1766 or 1778-9? Was she 51 when George was born? I have tried to trace her parents but no success. Thought Richard might be younger brother of George Bradburn born 1762. Would be interested in any further research. All the best Julie P

Julie,

Most Catholic Churches did not maintain baptismal records before 1800. Many did not start until even later. Civil records began in 1864.

Info from the internet-

The fire that destroyed most Church of Ireland records of Cavan, Ireland, occurred on 30 June 1922 during the Irish Civil War. The Public Records Office, which housed many of Ireland's genealogical treasures, was heavily damaged, and the fire resulted in the loss of over 800 years' worth of documents. However, not all records were lost; some fragments of the 1821-1851 censuses survived, and indexes to probate records remained available. The fire had a devastating impact on Irish genealogy, but it did not completely obliterate the records of Cavan or any other parish.

Were Cavan County, Ireland records destroyed in 1922 fire?

Yes, the records for sixteen County Cavan parishes were destroyed in the 1922 fire. However, these records were copied and stored in the Cavan Courthouse, allowing for their survival. The surviving records include those for Annagelliffe, Ballymachugh, Castletara, Castlerahan, Crosserlough, Denn, Drumlumman, Drung, and Laragh (joint returns), Kilbride, Kilmore, Kinawley, Lavey, Lurgan, Mullagh, and Munterconnaught. The Cavan Genealogy Online Records database includes these surviving records and provides a comprehensive resource for genealogical research in County Cavan.

This was the only record I found for a Margaret McDowell born about the right time in Cavan. She wasn't born in Drumgallon so probably not yours. Typically, they did not celebrate birthdays in Ireland so many people did not know their birth year. Records like censuses could be off by 10 years or more.

Thanks Mary I visited the Cavan Genealogy Centre in 2018 and was posted the census information. The marriage record for Richard and Margaret doesn't mention parents' names unfortunately but sometimes only first name or spouse is given in English records. The name Mcdowell was quite common in Roscommon county. Thought Margaret's family might be from there. Have more information on the Bradburns in Cavan. Again thanks for the reply Julie P

A postscript to above Are Drumgoon and Drumgallon Cavan the same place? Julie P
