Alexander MORTLAND

Hello Louise

My name is Fiona Bruce nee MORTLAND and I am the Great Grand daughter of Alexander MORTLAND who immigrated to NZ on the Tintern Abbey on 03 May 1875.

I have recently been reseaching my Fathers heritage, he is 80 years old and has always wanted to know where Alexander came from.  My father is the son of David MORTLAND who was one of eight children that Alex and Sarah had in Canterbury New Zealand.

I found this post you made several years ago and to say my father was excited was a understatement, did you find out where John MORTLAND or Eliza Mary ORR came from?  We would dearly love to know.

I do hope this message finds you fit and well.

regards Fiona

Mortland is not a common name in Ireland. There aren’t many in the statutory records. The few that there are, are mostly in Co. Tyrone or nearby in Donegal.

Here’s a John Mortland death in 1881. (Don’t know if it’s your family):

Here’s a John Mortland marrying in 1845 in Castlederg. He was a widower.

Hi there

Eliza Jane Eccles named on the death certificate of John Mortland was my Great Grandmother. Her mother was Margaret Mortland b 1832. Margaret was married to William John Eccles. The family were tenant farmers, pigs & cattle. Leckin is the name of the farm, located near Killygordon in Donegal. Margaret is buried in Killygordon. Photographs can be found on Ancestry public member trees. And further information can be found in Ireland Petty Session Court Registers 1870-1875 and also for 1893. By 1901 Census the family have moved out of the farm, but still reside in Killygordon (House 1, Scotland, Killygordon, Donegal, not Scotland the country).

I hope this provides some help.

Hello Kerry

Hello from Christchurch New Zealand , thank you for this information. I have found the answer confirming Alexander's parents were Joannis (John) and Maria Anna MORTLAND, he was baptised at Killygordon Donegal. Alexander continued to successfully farm in New Zealand having a very comfortable life.
