1830 Galway drowning in Cork Harbor.

I have recently found a mention of a drowning in Cork Harbor in 1830. His name is Pierce Galway and his two eldest sons drown while pleasure boating.  I cannot find any mention of this anywhere and I am wondering if anyone has.  I am a novice at family history and I am sure I am missing places to look. Any help would be great. This family are cousins.

Thank you!

Hi, Are you sure of the year?  And did Pierce drown too? Thanks.

Found this article on IrishNewsArchive:

Kerry Evening Post 1813-1917, Wednesday, July 28, 1830; Page: 2

RUMOURED FATAL ACCIDENT—We feel extreme regret in stating, that considerable fears are entertained that _Capt. Pierce Galwey, his two sons, one 17 and the other 12 years old,, with a servant boy, have met a watery grave, Capt. Galwey having proceeded from Passage with them on Thursday last, in a small sail boat, for a relative of his in the vicinity of _Kinsale, and no account having been since received of them. _Fears for _their safety have been entertained by it being mentioned that a boat was seen off_Ringabella, bottom up, in the course of Saturday.

Thank all for your replies!  I thought I would add a little more information that I have gathered.  My initial information was gathered from the sources commented on here.  But the newspaper article was new to me so thank you for posting it.

Pierce Galwey was married to Sarah Johnson.  (I cannot find a marriage date)

They have at least 4 kids.

Mary Ann Galwey 1811-1878

Edward Galwey 1813-

Susan Galewy 1819-1871

Richard George Galwey 1821-1858

I do not have any death record for Edward but for Richard I do.  This leads me to believe that he had at least another son maybe two as the newspaper article a well as the says his two oldest sons died.  Richards death date does not match. If the birth year is correct for Richard he would have been only 9 where the article stated they younger was 12.

Edward, assuming the birth year is correct,  would have been 17 matching the newpaper article. He possibly is one of the boys that drowned with their Dad, Pierce.

Thank you all so much for your input.  This is more information than what I had and I am deeply grateful.  If anyone happens to have any more, I would love to hear it.

Alice,

While the dead child may have been another son, it may also have been Richard. A reporter was told the ages of the dead boys by someone else. That someone may have been wrong. The reporter may have written down the wrong age. The printer may have made an error.  Just like today!  So don't discount that it was Richard who drowned.

Patricia,

Again thank you for your input.  You have given me much to think about.  I do have a death record and will for Richard which names his sister Susan in his will and her husband George Newenham.  I also found a passage in the Landed Gentry (I think), but I don't know how accurate these are.  It said

Pierce drowned off. cork Harbour with his two eldest sons....By his wife Sarah he left Edward, Richard, Mary-Anne and Susan.  The wording makes me question who the two boys that drowned were.

This family has been a mystery to me for the last couple of years that I work on off and on.  Maybe I will never know but I actually know more now that I did. Thank you for you input.
