William Lanigan was my great-great grandfather who emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1857, and possibly disembarked in Geelong, Victoria.

William was born in Kilduff and baptised on 6 April 1832 in the pasrish of Templemore, Tipperary.

Williams parents were Michael Lanigan (1797 - 1872) and Johanna (Searson) Lanigan (1798 - 1878).

William went to seek his fortune in the Gippsland goldfields and was a prosector, where he married Anne Dwyer (from Ballyine, Limerick) in 1863 in the mining area known BB Creek, Jericho, Victoria.

In 1871 William was elected to the local school board and in 1874 elected to the Gippsland Mining Board.

In 1876, William and Anne and their six children, at the time, moved to Upper Maffra, where they had a sawmill operation, apprently logging thre local red gum trees which were used to coblle streets in Melbourne.

Two more children were born after arriving in Upper Maffra.

In 1884 William became a farmer and was a cheesemaker, and manager of the local creamery factory in Newry.

Williams wife, Anne, died in 1897, and William died 10 years later in 1907, and both were buried in the Maffra Cemetery.
