William and his sister Anne were likely born in Rathvilly, Carlow to a John Doyle and Elizabeth Donnan. Little is known about his early years but it's speculated that he emigrated around 1812, either just before or just after marrying his wife, Elizabeth Power, and by 1813 they had their first son William, born in New Brunswick, Canada.
County Carlow, or Ceatharlach in Irish, is located in the south-east of Ireland. It is the second smallest county in Ireland and home to the prehistoric Browne’s Hill Dolmen – the capstone of which is reputed to be the largest in Europe. Royal University of Ireland founded
<p>In accordance with the University Education (Ireland) Act 1879, The Royal University of Ireland was founded as an examining and degree-awarding university (based on the model of the University of London). A Royal Charter was issued on 27 April 1880 which entitled the Royal University to grant any degree, similar to that of any other university in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (except in theology and divinity).</p>
