William Delea of farm holding #5a Boardee, Tracton Co. Cork (just north of Tracton cross) is recorded as DELAY in earlier records and DUNLEA in 1901.

  • William held a substantial 78 acres of land here on the border with Robertstown and Granig (Upper).
  • His farmhouse and outbuildings at #5a were rated at £2 5s (the average being 15s at the time).
  • Boardee-Graning-Roberstown-Kilmoney (all adjoining townlands) was a strong DELEA family cluster.

The William Delay who appears on record as WILLIAM DELEA in 1851 Griffiths Valuation,  is likely William Delea Jr (son of William Delay Sr & Eliza Murphy)

William Delay Sr. & Eliza Murphy baptised the following children in the RC Parish of Tracton Abbey:

1814 William Delay, GP Cornelius Murphy & Mary Delay

1816 Michael Delay GP John Bradley & El Murphy

1819 Catherine GP Jer Murphy & Mary Foot /Foote

1821 John Delay GP Dav Murphy & El Coughlan

1823 Mary GP Mick Murphy & Eliza Allen

1825 Jeremiah Delay GP Thomas Allen & Eliza Jeffords

1828 Margaret GP Dennis Foote (of Granig) and Ellen Jeffers (Jeffords)

1834 Edmund Delay 1831 GP John Rahy & Mgt Scannel,

1834 Robert Delay GP Dennis Allen & Mary Daly

The RC parish records are pretty good for this early period but do not record an address.

The pattern of births suggests the possibility of older siblings before church records began. Eliza Murphy & William Delea Sr. likely married circa 1810.

The spelling of the family name evolved from Dunlay to Delay to DELEA by 1901.

Death certs for William Delea (x 2 GRO Kinsale) are not yet avaiable to view online.

Headstones for their descendants can be found at Tracton Abbey Churchyard.

DALY = DELEA

In the 1833 Tithe Applotment Books (TA) both William Delay and Daniel Delay (Daly GV) appear on record in Boardee, with Pat Delay (Daly GV) residing just across the townland border in Granig. (By 1851, Daniel and Pat were still present here but recorded as DALY in Griffith's Valuation)

This family cluster of DELAY (aka Delea aka Daly) farms were all adjascent to each other (at the intersection of Ballyfeard, Tracton, & Kilmoney parishes):

  • Charles Daly (bog at #2 Boardee)
  • Widow Dealy (aka Mary DALY farm #23 Kilmoney)
  • Patrick Dealy (TA Kilmoney)

*Patrick Delay (TA1833) was recorded as Delea when he married McNamara, but DALY (GV1851) at Granig #1 and #2 (land held in partnership with Joe & Dan Coveney of #3 Granig).
