Thomas Shee, O'Shea, was born in Coolbawn Townland, Castlecomer Parish, Kilkenny Co., Ireland on or about his recorded baptismal date of 18 December 1817 the son of Henry Powers Shee and Elizabeth Shore. At the age of about 21 he with his brother Patrick, aged about 17, immigrated from Ireland to Canada arriving in York Co., in 1842. They first settled in the Home District later Peel County where some of the older Shore family members were already residing.

Thomas married Eleanor Trainor of King Township York County, Ontario, Canada, born in County Armagh Ireland in 1825, on 3 October 1847 at St. James Colgan, in Adjala Township, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Thomas and Eleanor moved to the Primrose area of Adjala Township and began farming in that area. They had eight children born to them on the farm. First was Henry 1846-1907; Patrick Joseph 1850-1906; Catherine 1851-1943; Andrew 1855-1857; John 1855- 1921; Eleanor Marie 1858-1949; Elizabeth 1862-1886; and Mary 1864 - 1871. Both Andrew and Mary are buried in a small Catholic cemetery very near their farm in Adjala Township, Simcoe County.

In Feb 1842 Thomas immigrated to Saline Co., Kansas USA taking with him some of the children. He was followed in Oct 1871 by Eleanor, Henry (my grandfather) and the remaining living children. They homesteaded in Saline County and remained there for the rest of their lives.

Both Thomas and Eleanor with most of the children are buried in Mount Calvery Catholic Cemetery in Salina, Saline Co., Kansas.

    Travelling Folk in the 1930s

Between 1937 and 1939, primary school pupils across the Republic of Ireland interviewed the elderly in their neighborhood to collect and record local stories and folklore from the 19th century. "The Schools Collection" as it became known is held by the Dúchas Folklore Collection in UCD and is and has been digitized online at duchas.ie. One of the topics schoolchildren were asked to write about were "Travelling Folk" or An Lucht Siúil.

Here is a selection of what "settled" children wrote about travelers in the late 1930s.
