Richard Shanahan was baptized on 5 Apr 1801 in Killough townland, Gaile Civil Parish, County Tipperary, Ireland.  His father was Denis Shanahan and his mother was Mary Russell.  

Richard married Mary Carey aka Carew on 8 Feb 1838 in Clonoulty Roman Catholic Parish, Diocese of Cashel and Emly, Tipperary, Ireland.  Richard and Mary had two sons, Denis 1839 and Michael 1840 born in County Tipperary.  

The family immigrated to Australia on the SS "England" and arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Australia on 17 Jul 1841.  

The couple had 4 more children in Australia (Mary, Matthew, Bridget and John) and Richard died at Splitter's Creek, Murrurundi, New South Wales, Australia on 8 Apr 1884.
