Hi seeking potential Dixon ancestors/ current relatives of Henry Dixon, my GGG uncle who was a labourer from Castleconor Sligo.

Henry enlisted with the British Army on October 6, 1807 and eventually joined the 49th Regiment of Foot (Wolf's Own) on September 1, 1808.

He served as a Private in in Lower Canada, now know as as the province of Quebec, and later Upper Canada (now known as Ontario|) during the War of 1812. I

Initially he was based in Montreal & Three Rivers before being dispatched to Upper Canada where he saw action in Kingston, Niagara, Queenston, Stoney Creek, where he was severely wounded in 1813, and then York. By late 1814, he was back in Lower Canada (Ile aux Noix).

Henry returned to England via "Sea Horse Transport" in June 1815 (Weymouth, Portsmouth) then went on to Ireland in 1816 (Dublin, Wicklow, Clonmel, Monkstown and Skibbereen, until discharged on November 17, 1818, when the regiment was reduced.

Henry had an older brother Samuel Dixon (my GGG grandfather) b. circa 1784 in Kilmore County Mayo who was a weaver before he joined the 47th Regiment of Foot in 1813. More info re Samuel can be found separately on the Mayo message board, After Samuel was discharged in August 5, 1830 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, Henry met up with Samuel and Samuel's wife and family at some point prior to migrating to Canada in 1831. They arrived in Quebec City and departed by steamship on June 8, 1831 for Montreal , Quebec, before making their way to Perth, Upper Canada.

Henry had a daughter ,Ann who was born in Ireland in the early1820s, but she did not join him in Canada until circa 1834.

I have no information pertaining to the mother of Ann but I am aware of her marriage and lineage here.

Both brothers were Church of England and settled in Bathurst Township, Lanark County (just outside Perth) and took up farming.

At the age of 64, Henry was eventually granted a Royal Chelsea pension in 1853 while based in Perth.

Exact date and place of death of Henry is unknown but it was after the 1861 Canadian census. Samuel died after the 1851 census.

Hoping to surface info relating to Henry and Samuel's parents, any potential siblings and descendants currently in Sligo

    Famine Distress in Ireland

In the summer of 1822 a bad potato crop and limited employment opportunities created famine conditions in the west and south-west of Ireland. The partial failure of the potato crop in 1821 precipitated a food crisis, with extreme distress occurring in 9 counties from late April until mid-August 1822. In the month of July alone, over one million poor people in counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo, were estimated to be living on the verge of starvation in the month of July alone. Starvation and typhus caused deaths in many parts of the countryside and rural towns.
