I am descended from Pierce, who travelled from Liverpool on 15 October 1853 and arrived in Melbourne 1 January 1854. He was one of 418 passengers, he was aged 22, occupation labourer, Irish.

Pierce married on 16 September 1854 in St Francis' Church, Melbourne. (Bartholomew Hayes was a witness.) Pierce and his wife Eliza had travelled to the goldfields after their marriage and remained near Bendigo where they farmed. They had five children. His 1889 death notice in Melbourne’s, The Advocate, was the best way to notify friends and any of his surviving siblings, across Victoria.

    Travelling Folk in the 1930s

    <p>Between 1937 and 1939, primary school pupils across the Republic of Ireland interviewed the elderly in their neighborhood to collect and record local stories and folklore from the 19th century. "The Schools Collection" as it became known is held by the Dúchas Folklore Collection in UCD and is and has been digitized online at duchas.ie. One of the topics schoolchildren were asked to write about were "Travelling Folk" or An Lucht Siúil. </p> <p>Here is a selection of what "settled" children wrote about travelers in the late 1930s.</p>

    Darby O'Gill and the Little People 1959 Movie Premiere

    <p>In 1959, Disney's Irish-themed movie "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" premiered in Dublin. Most of its stars were Irish actors, save for Scotsman Sean Connery (who became James Bond three years later). Walt Disney himself was of Irish extraction; his great-grandfather Arundel Elias Disney emigrated to America from Gowran, Co Kilkenny, in 1823. Connery, the film's last surviving actor, passed away on Halloween 2020.</p>
