Patrick Hartnett was baptised on 17th March 1844, St Patrick's Day, at Queenstown; and was the son of William Hartnett and Mary Dun(ne).
He had siblings of Michael,(b 1840), Ann,(b 1845), William,(b 1848), Margaret, (b 1850) and Samuel,(b 1854).
He married Mary Jane Coghlan on 7th February 1874, at Kinsale, Co Cork.
Patrick served many years in the Navy before he became a coastguard, as was Mary Jane's father, Jeremiah Coghlan.
He served around the Kinsale, Queenstown and Sandy Cove areas.
Sometime between 1874 and 1876, he moved with Mary Jane to Leven, Fife, Scotland; and then on to North Berwick, where he continued to be a coastguard.
By 1881, they were parents to William Jeremiah,(b 1875 Leven -1898), Patrick, (b 1878 North Berwick-1888) and Mary Jane, my grandmother, (b 1880 NB-1935). Then by 1891, Patrick retired from the Coastguard service and was working as a Light Porter for a Jewellers in Edinburgh. The family had been joined by Constance, (b 1881 North Berwick- 1926), John, (b 1884 North Berwick- 1967), Joseph Patrick, (b 1890 Edinburgh- 1895), and Lillian, (b 1892 Edinburgh- 1990). He worked as a Porter between 1891 and 1911, and completed the 1911 census only 5 days before he died.
He was survived by his wife, Mary Jane, and daughters, Mary Jane, Constance, Lillian and son, John.
Mary Jane Coghlan Hartnett died in 1926, still at 65 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh, where they had lived for the past 25+ years.
