Migrated to/Born in USA

James Grattan was born some time between 1800 and 1810, I believe, and family lore says he was born in Carrick-on-Shannon, Roscommon. He married Julia Brennan (a Presbyterian) in Killukin parish, Carrick-on-Shannon, Roscommon between 1820-1828.

Grattan was commonly misspelled Gralton and Griffith’s Valuation of 1858 shows James Gralton in the County of Roscommon, Barony Boyle, Killukin Parish, Lodge Townland. (Is this an actual address or a general location?)

A rootsweb listing that someone sent me shows the Christenings of 3 Gralton children, father James or Jacobi and mother Judith Brennan 1834-1841. There were a total of 9 offspring of James and Julia. I suspect these are my ancestors.

James and Julia’s son, Owen Grattan, was born January 26, 1840 in Carrick-on-Shannon, Roscommon. He emigrated with his parents in 1865. James died at sea. The others settled in Minnesota, USA.

I believe Julia Brennan’s parents were James Brennan and Denis (sp?). I know nothing of their other children or their ancestors.

In March 1766, the Irish House of Lords instructed Church of Ireland parish clergy to compile ‘a list of the several families in their parishes’ – to record the religion of the householders and to identify any Roman Catholic priests and friars living in their area. Although most of the original 1766 religious census returns were destroyed Dublin's Public Records Office fire of 1922, a few fragments survived.
