John G. Flood was the son of J.G. Flood and Mary (Mae) Maughayan. (Note: The spelling of Mary Maughayan's surname was obtained from John Flood's bible, but it appears to be a misspelling of a similar name, possibly Maughan, Monaghan, Maughereghan, etc). Various records indicate that John was born in Ireland between 1822 and 1833. In May 1850, he emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York City aboard the ship "Eliza". He proceeded to Wheeling, Ohio County, Virginia (now in West Virginia) and began working as a stone cutter. In June 1853, he married his first wife, Mary Carpenter, at St. James Cathedral (Catholic) in Wheeling. Over the next several years, the couple had three sons, William Henry, John Franklin and Michael James. In 1858, the family moved to Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio. Between 1859 and 1867, the couple had four additional children, Margaret Ann, Mary Elizabeth, John Thomas and Catherine Agnes. In 1865, John enlisted in the Union Army, eventually attaining the rank of Corporal. In November 1870, his wife Mary died at the age of 42, leaving John as the sole parent of seven children. In August 1871, he married his second wife, Catherine Agnes 'Kate' Hart in Steubenville. In June 1872, John and Kate had their only child, Ellen Victoria. Three months later in September 1872, John G. Flood passed away in Steubenville.

John Flood was survived by at least one brother, William Henry Flood, who remained in Ireland. William was born in Fivemilebourne, Carrickfad Townland, in the Parish of Drumlease, County Leitrim in 1832. In about 1850, he moved to County Waterford, eventually becoming Master of the Lismore Union Workhouse. In February 1856, he married the Matron of the Workhouse, Catherine Martina Fitzsimon. Between 1856 and 1864, the couple had seven children. In October 1857, they had a set of twin boys, William Henry Grattan and Francis Joseph. William Henry Grattan Flood went on to become a well-known author, historian and musicologist who was awarded the Papal Cross by Pope Benedict XV in 1917. In 1922 he was inducted into the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Leo XIII. Following his inuction, he was given the title "Chevalier Flood". William H.G. Flood passed away on August 6, 1928 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford. His obituary in the Journal of the Breiffne Antiquarian and Historical Society mentioned that his grandfather (J.G. Flood) was buried in Sligo Abbey. Additional details regarding William Henry Flood and his son, William Henry Grattan Flood, will be posted in separate profiles at a later date.
