Michael Doherty was born in early April 1843 in Donohill, County Tipperary, Ireland (He was the son of Maurice Doherty and Julia Breen). He was baptised on 9 April 1843 in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Donohill, Co Tipperary. He emigrated on the SS Abyssinian which departed from Bristol, Somerset, England. The SS Abyssinian arrived on 20 September 1859 in Port Botany NSW, Australia.
He married Mary Connelly on 9 January 1871 at Rosebank, Dungog, NSW. She was born on 28 August 1852 in at Dungog, NSW. (She was the daughter of John Connelly and Mary Fallon). She died on 11 August 1890 in the family’s Belmore Road residence, West Maitland, NSW, Australia.
Michael died on 5 June 1909 in West Maitland, NSW, Australia. He was buried on 6 June 1909 in Campbell's Hill Cemetery, Maitland. His occupation in 1909 was Road Maintenance Worker.
