Based on later records (e.g. death and marriage) seems to have been born in Bulgaden in around 1836. No evidence of this from birth or baptism records however.
Migrated to Australia at some time before 1860. Some possible emigration ship records but nothing confirmed. Difficult to find him in Melbourne because he used the surname "de Clare" for a while when he first arrived. This appeared on the birth certificate of his first daughter (born out of wedlock).
Military settler in NZ between 1864 and 1869. Appears to have intended to stay but was not able to make a living farming the land and so returned to Melbourne.
10 children.
Died in Melbourne by suicide after heavy drinking. Coverage in newspapers as well as death certificate etc
