The family lore is that he was born on a ship traveling from NY back to Ireland, of parents James J Toale and Mary Hughes. His baptism was at St. Brigid's church, Dundalk, County Louth , recorded as October 20, 1898 in Catholic baptism registry as Parish of Faughart. I am searching but cannot find a birth registration. Ancestry does have a Civil Birth Registration of James Toal in December 1898 in Dundalk (FHL film 101067, vol 2, p. 667), but I don't know if this is ours-- there are Toals (no e) in this area-- and I haven't been able to see the original record. I don't know the name of the ship.

While his father (James J Toale) went back and forth to NYC before re-settling in Dundalk at the family farm with his sister, James E Toale, his mother and siblings all lived in NY
