James was born in Newmarket, County Cork in 1838 and it appears he was the 3rd son to Patrick and Mary (nee Sullivan) Connell. His siblings were Mary, Philip, Patrick and Johanna. He came to Australia on the "Stebonheath", arriving in 1858 and married Margaret Halpin (from County Clare) in 1862 at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. He worked as a labourer and he and Mary had 8 children.
