William Sweetman (1794-1867)

William Sweetman was my great great great grandfather.

He was baptized on 11 May 1794 in Carrick on Suir. He is recorded in his baptism record as:  Guilelmus Sweetman and his sponsors were Patrick Michael Shea and Maria Butler.  His siblings were:  James, John, Catherine, Margaret, Anastacia, and Michael. William’s parents were recorded as Patrick and Maria Ailward Sweetman in the parish of Waterford and Lismore in Carrick on Suir, County Tipperary.[1]

The Tithe Applotment in 1827, shows William and Patrick Sweetman (maybe William’s father?) and Michael MacGrath in Ballyknockan, Templetenny in County Tipperary.[2]  Later, both William Sweetman and Michael MacGrath resided on the estate of Charles Bianconi in Longfield, Tipperary.[3]  Patrick Sweetman was also employed by Charles Bianconi.[4]  It is unclear how this Patrick was related.

William married Margaret Bridget Daniel about 1834.

An autobiography of Charles Bianconi was written by his daughter, Mrs. Morgan John O’Connell. Included in this autobiography is a letter written in 1852 from Catherine Bianconi to Mr. O’Leary requesting William Sweetman get paid “2 shillings 6 pence”.[5]  In 1852, William was a farmer and gardener in Longfield for Charles Bianconi.

On 6 July 1867, William died in Longfield, Civil Parish of Ardmayle, Registration District: Cashel in County Tipperary of “chronic disease of lung and stomach”.[6] One of William’s sons, James Sweetman (1836-1903), was Charles Bianconi’s personal butler. Mr. Bianconi died on James Sweetman’s shoulder.[7] Another of William’s sons, William Edward Sweetman (1841-1926), migrated to Irvington on Hudson, New York in 1864.

Researched and written by Teresa Sweetman.
