Matthew, a farm labourer, was accompanied by brother, Patrick and sister, Mary and migrated to Australia on board on board "China" arriving in Sydney, Australia on 28 September 1854. They were sponsored by an uncle, Thomas Kearns.
Matthew was to marry, Mary Ann Armstrong, a fellow passenger from the "China" on 9 July 1955 and had 4 daughters and a son.
Ship's manifest recorded parents names as John & Anne.
