When Mary Waldron and her twin sister Kate were born in 1827 in Ballyhaunis, Mayo, Ireland, their father, Anthony, was 22 and their mother, Honor, was 27. Mary Waldron married John Durkin in 1856 in New York City, New York. They had two children (twins) during their marriage. She died as a young mother on December 16, 1857, nine days after the twins were born in New York City, New York, at the age of 30, and was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Queens, New York. One of the twins, Mary, died 15 days later, on December 22, 1857 and was buried with her mother.

John Durkin was also from County Mayo, Ireland, thought to be from Westport. He volunteered with the Fighting 69th (the "Irish Brigade") and served as an assistant to the chaplain, Fr. Willett (Ouillet) during the Civil War. He was a brick mason.

The other twin, Anna Elizabeth Durkin, lived. Anna married Patrick Joseph Mooney in New York in 1879.

The photo of Mary Waldron is of a daguerrotype, which has been handed down from Anna Elizabeth Durkin Mooney to her daughter, Anna Irene Mooney Heckman, to her daughter, Marguerite Heckman Kelley, to her daughter, Paula Kelley Ward.

    Kildavnet Freeholders List

A unique Census Substitute for the townland of Carrickkildavnet aka Kildavnet in 1829. This Freeholders List can provide useful information about those who held enough land to register to vote. While the smaller tenant farmers who suffered most during the Great Famine won't appear on this list, there may be a few surprises included here (that didn't appear on Tithe applotment records). These could be partners on a freehold lease. Can you find your ancestor's name below?

    Famine Distress in Ireland

In the summer of 1822 a bad potato crop and limited employment opportunities created famine conditions in the west and south-west of Ireland. The partial failure of the potato crop in 1821 precipitated a food crisis, with extreme distress occurring in 9 counties from late April until mid-August 1822. In the month of July alone, over one million poor people in counties Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Clare, Galway, Roscommon, Sligo, Leitrim and Mayo, were estimated to be living on the verge of starvation in the month of July alone. Starvation and typhus caused deaths in many parts of the countryside and rural towns.
