When John Patrick Grace was born on January 16, 1855, in St. John's, Kilkenny, Ireland, his father, Thomas, was 32 and his mother, Ellen, was 30. He married Mary Ann Colter in 1874 in Oldham, Lancashire, England. They had six children in 10 years. He died on June 26, 1936, in Winthrop, Massachusetts, at the age of 81.
