There have only been bits and pieces put together about John Hassen, father of John Hassen/Hassett of Brownstown, Castletowndevlin, Westmeath (Clonmellon RC Parish). Clonmellon Parish lists a large number of Hassett individuals but records are few on them. In the early 1800s, about the time I am searching out the parents of my 3x great-grandfather John Hassett. At the time of his birth in 1805, there were 4 other John Hassetts (Gaelic variations on the name such as Hassen) and in the Clonmellon Parish records are born 4 John Hassetts, 3 of which are illigitimate, mothers being Maguire, Sheridan, & Tolan. The 4th is legitimate, John son of John & Nelly McCormick b.1805, my 3x great-grandfather.

    May Day traditions across Ireland

Lá Bealtaine (May Day) officially heralds the beginning of the summer in Ireland. Old traditions involved lighting bonfires at sunset on Oíche Bealtaine (or May Eve - April 30) on prominent local landmarks. The Hill of Uisneach in Co. Westmeath is the most famous example. These and other rituals (such as creating a May altar) still survive, particularly in the west of Ireland. Our 19th-century ancestral piseóga (superstitions) were recorded diligently by Irish schoolchildren in the 1930s ...

In early 1923, during the period of civil war in Ireland, Anti-Treatyites embarked on a concentrated campaign against the Big Houses of the he landed gentry. Between June 1922-April 1923, a staggering 199 Big Houses went up in flames. In the civil war, the only county in Leinster with no burnings was Queens County (now Laois).
