When John Harkins was born in 1795 in Donegal, Donegal, Ireland, his father, Cornelius, was 25. He had seven children with Bridget Harkins and five children with Mary Harkins. He died on May 17, 1887, in Almakee, Iowa, at the impressive age of 92.
