John Grant was the son of Joseph Grant and Alice Fogarty of Loughmore, Tipperary. John and Joseph were farmers in Graiguefrahane, Loughmore at the time of the Griffiths Valuation.
John married Ellen Tierney circa 1841. In 1851, John and Ellen emigrated to Melbourne, Australia where John became a successful publican and property owner.
