Brother of Winifred and Johanna Ryan, who emigrated as Irish Orphan Girls per John Knox in 1850.

Jeremiah trained and became a lay teacher in NSW Catholic schools, entering the teaching service in 1864 and retired in 1903.

Used O'Ryan as his surname in Australia.
