James Murray was the second surviving son of Michael Murray and Anne Ward.

He was born in Balroe/Balrow in 1864.

By 1869 the family moved to Ballynacargy.

He was a postman and also had a bit of land with some cattle. The 1901 census shows he and his wife and children living in Ballyncargy.

In 1911, they were living in Ballintue. Sometime after his death, his widow Julia and at least some of the children moved to Dublin, including his oldest son Michael Joseph. His children were Mary, Michael, Ellen, Hubert, Anthony, Christopher, Elizabeth, and John.

James' siblings were: John, Ann, Mary, Kate, Michael, Margaret, Agnes, Patrick, and Joseph.
