James Mullen was born in Bohalas on 5 December 1894 the son of Patrick Mullen and Catherine Dillon. He emigrated to England and married Delia Durkin in Denaby, Yorkshire. Together they had six children. He worked as a coal miner. During the General Strike in 1926 together with a number of Irishmen living in Denaby he left England to find work in the United States and provide for his growing family. He travelled to New York as his brother Thady was already living there. He intended that his wife and children would follow him to New York. This never happened and he returned to Denaby and ran two grocery stores. His wife died in 1947. Four of his children eventually emigrated to the United States and he divided his time between the United States and England. He died in Doncaster on 4 October 1975 and is buried in Denaby.
